As Earth rotates, its spin axis — an imaginary line that passes through the North and South Poles — drifts and wobbles. Scientists now have, for the 1st time, identified 3 reasons why.

Unlike a plastic globe of Earth, the real planet Earth isn’t perfectly round and doesn’t spin smoothly. The imaginary line around which Earth spins – passing through the North and South Poles – is called its spin axis. Scientists have known for a long time that Earth’s spin axis drifts and wobbles. Measurements over the 20th century show that Earth’s spin axis drifts by about 4 inches (10 cm) per year. Over the course of a century, that’s more than 11 yards (10 meters). This week (September 19, 2018), NASA scientists announced they’ve used observational and model-based data spanning the 20th century in order to identify – for the first time – three processes primarily responsible for this drift.

The three processes are mass loss due to melting ice (mostly in Greenland), the lifting of land masses as glaciers have melted since the last ice age (aka glacial rebound), and the slow creeping motion of rocky material in Earth’s interior mantle, caused by convection currents carrying heat from our planet’s interior to its surface (this third process is called mantle convection).

Scientists call the drift of Earth’s spin-axis its polar motion. Surendra Adhikari of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California is first author on the new paper describing the causes for the drift. He said:

The traditional explanation is that one process, glacial rebound, is responsible for this motion of Earth’s spin axis. But recently, many researchers have speculated that other processes could have potentially large effects on it as well.

We assembled models for a suite of processes that are thought to be important for driving the motion of the spin axis. We identified not one but three sets of processes that are crucial — and melting of the global cryosphere (especially Greenland) over the course of the 20th century is one of them.

His team’s statement said:

In general, the redistribution of mass on and within Earth — like changes to land, ice sheets, oceans and mantle flow — affects the planet’s rotation. As temperatures increased throughout the 20th century, Greenland’s ice mass decreased. In fact, a total of about 7,500 gigatons — the weight of more than 20 million Empire State Buildings — of Greenland’s ice melted into the ocean during this time period. This makes Greenland one of the top contributors of mass being transferred to the oceans, causing sea level to rise and, consequently, a drift in Earth’s spin axis.

While ice melt is occurring in other places (like Antarctica), Greenland’s location makes it a more significant contributor to polar motion.

Coauthor Erik Ivins, also of JPL, explained:

There is a geometrical effect that if you have a mass that is 45 degrees from the North Pole — which Greenland is — or from the South Pole (like Patagonian glaciers), it will have a bigger impact on shifting Earth’s spin axis than a mass that is right near the Pole.

Previous studies identified glacial rebound as the key contributor to long-term polar motion. In the new study, which relied heavily on a statistical analysis of such rebound, scientists figured out that glacial rebound is likely to be responsible for only about a third of the polar drift in the 20th century.

Bottom line: Scientists thought the drift in Earth’s spin axis was primarily due to the lifting of land masses as ice has melted since the last ice age. A new study shows this mechanism can account for only a third of Earth’s spin axis drift, and names two other causes as well.

Defense Ministry officials made the claim at a news conference in Moscow on September 17, in an apparent attempt to discredit the findings of an international investigation that determined the system that fired the missile was brought into Ukraine from Russia before the Boeing 777 was shot down on July 17, 2014, and smuggled back into Russia afterward.

All 298 passengers and crew were killed when the jet, which was en route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, crashed in an area held by Russia-backed separatists in the Donetsk region.

The tragedy caused an international outcry and deepened tensions between Moscow and the West following Russia's seizure of Crimea and support for the militants in their fight against Kyiv's forces after pro-European protests pushed Moscow-friendly Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych from power.

The JIT also found that the Buk missile came from Russia's 53rd Antiaircraft Missile Brigade and was fired from territory held by the Russia-backed separatists.

Iranian nuclear chief Ali Akbar Salehi implicitly threatened Israel in an interview with the Associated Press Tuesday.

Addressing the assassinations of Iranian nuclear scientists, as well as the Stutnex computer virus which set back Iran's nuclear program, both of which have been blamed on Israel, Salehi said: "I hope that they will not commit a similar mistake again because the consequences would be, I think, harsh."

Salehi said that he hoped the 2015 nuclear deal would survive despite the withdrawal of the US and the re-imposition of sanctions on Iran.

"I think [Trump] is on the loser's side because he is pursuing the logic of power," Salehi said. "He thinks that he can, you know, continue for some time but certainly I do not think he will benefit from this withdrawal, certainly not."

He said that Iran was stronger now and better able to resist sanctions than it had been before the signing of the 2015 deal. "If we have to go back and withdraw from the nuclear deal, we certainly do not go back to where we were before. We will be standing on a much, much higher position."

A second case of monkeypox has been confirmed in England and this time it's in Lancashire.

Health officials say a patient has been diagnosed in Blackpool and is currently receiving treatment at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital.

It's thought they became infected while in Nigeria.

The disease is similar to smallpox, and although it's milder, it can still be fatal.

The first patient to be diagnosed, a Nigerian national, is being treated in London after being diagnosed with the rare viral infection while staying at a naval base in Cornwall.

Monkeypox is a rare viral infection, similar to smallpox though not as deadly, that was first discovered in monkeys in 1958.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday called on Russia and Iran to halt a looming “humanitarian disaster” in Idlib, saying Syrians there could not be left to the mercy of President Bashar Assad.

Erdogan has called for a cease-fire in the northwestern province of Idlib, the last opposition stronghold in Syria, as an assault by Syrian regime forces is expected any day.

Writing in the Wall Street Journal, Erdogan said the West had an “obligation to stop the next bloodshed” but that regime allies Moscow and Tehran were “likewise responsible for stopping this humanitarian disaster.”

The comments came four days after the Turkish president met his Russian and Iranian counterparts for a summit in Tehran, where Erdogan sought to avert a bloody assault in Idlib. 

Analysts said Erdogan failed at the summit to achieve his aim, and his comments appear to indicate growing frustration in Turkey that Iran and Russia are not reining in Assad.

While Turkey has been one of the main supporters of the Syrian opposition and called for Assad’s ouster, Ankara has until now worked closely with Assad’s allies Moscow and Tehran to find a political solution to the conflict. 

The UN has warned a large-scale military operation could create “the worst humanitarian catastrophe” of this century in Idlib, home to some 3 million people — about half of them displaced from other parts of the country.

The PC version of Overkill's The Walking Dead is getting a Closed Beta session early next month, the developer announced during a recent livestream.

Seventy percent of the Earth’s surface is hidden beneath the ocean, yet 95 percent of it remains unexplored to the human eye.

Strange footprints have been found on the bottom of the ocean floor by a deep-diving robot as part of a British study from the National Oceanographic Center in Southampton.

Scientists ruled out the possibility of the mysterious tracks, measuring 6.5 feet in length and 13 inches deep, discovered 2.4 miles below the surface of the Pacific Ocean between Mexico and Hawaii, being the result of mining or scientific operations.
They also said that the tracks were too large to be created by fish or any other deep-sea creatures.

“Analysis revealed that the depressions were not randomly distributed,” lead author of the research, Dr. Leigh Marsh, told the Express, adding that the most likely culprits are “deep-diving whales.”

Even though whales normally do not dive so deep, similar tracks found across the globe suggest that the large aquatic mammals can occasionally plunge to a depth of 2.5 miles and even more.

Scientists believe that “electronic depth-tags, attached to the animals, will provide direct evidence that whales can dive to these abyssal depths.”
While the discovery of mysterious footprints on the ocean floor has left researchers scratching their heads, conspiracy theorists have been quick to claim that UFO technology is to blame.

The former president told the crowd of Democrats he had been to Disneyland twice in his life, the first when he was 11. It was his first “big” trip to the mainland from Hawaii, Obama was with his grandmother, mother and younger sister.

“There is no better time to go to Disneyland than when you’re 11 years old,” he told the crowd. Although he travelled across the United States, he said Disneyland was the highlight.
The second time Obama went, he was in college.
“We came down here not to go to the Matterhorn or to do Pirates of the Caribbean, but to see Kool and the Gang.
“We went into the gondolas,” Obama continued. “And I’m ashamed to say this, so close your ears young people … but a few of us were smoking.”
The anecdote was greeted with laughter and cheers from the audience.
“These were cigarettes, people,” he clarified. “I’m a teenager, I’m rebellious.”
“As we’re coming in, there are these two very large Disneyland police officers and they say ‘Sir, can you come with us?’ and they escorted us out of Disneyland.”
Obama went on the explain even when he was being escorted out, he was told he was “welcome back anytime”.
Of course this story prompted a lot of people to express their admiration for the popular former President, or judge his youthful indiscretions.

Although his story of Disneyland was amusing, the tone of the rally was more sinister.

Clashes between Kurdish forces and regime fighters in the divided northeastern city of Qamishli killed 18 combatants Saturday, the Kurdish forces and a war monitor said.
The rare flare-up in the Kurdish-majority city near the Turkish border saw 11 regime fighters and seven Kurds killed, the Kurdish security forces known as Asayesh said in a statement.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based war monitor, reported the same death toll for the fighting near a Kurdish checkpoint in the city.

The Asayesh said a regime "patrol opened fire on our forces with light and medium weapons, causing our forces to respond to this violation, which killed 11 regime fighters... and seven of our comrades".
The Observatory said the shootout started when Asayesh members at the checkpoint asked regime fighters aboard a patrol vehicle to step out but they refused.

Barack Obama spoke President Donald Trump’s name for the first time to criticize his successor for fanning the flames of bigotry.

The former president criticized Trump for exploiting historic tensions to halt progress in civil rights, but he said the current president is not to blame for racism and other hateful ideas.


“It did not start with Donald Trump,” Obama said. “He is a symptom, not the cause. He’s just capitalizing on resentments that politicians have been fanning for years.”

Obama also took a shot at Trump’s claims about the economy.
“When you hear how great the economy’s doing right now, let’s just remember when this recovery started,” Obama said. “I mean, I’m glad it’s continued, but when you hear about this economic miracle that’s been going on, when the monthly job numbers come out, Republicans say, ‘It’s a miracle.’ I have to remind them and say those job numbers are the same as they were in 2015 and 2016.”

“But anyway,” he said, as the crowd laughed, “I digress.”

Virginia GOP Senate nominee Corey Stewart is one of Donald Trump’s most consistent and fervent supporters. The native Minnesotan is known for his sympathy for conspiracy theories and for his flirtations with the “alt right.” Conservatives in Virginia have watched with amazement as Stewart cheers the 45th president at every turn, declining to criticize even his most craven and outrageous antics.

Behold, Stewart has finally found a reason to express apprehension about something Trump did. “I almost never differ with President Trump,” he explained in a somber email to supporters, “but in this case I do.” What was the disgrace that Stewart just couldn’t look past? The president’s proposal to freeze the pay of federal employees in 2019, which the White House put forward as part of its budget negotiations. Whether the administration sticks to its position is an open question, but most conservatives like the idea, believing that the federal workforce is too large and frequently overpaid, especially in the greater D.C. area.

Not Corey Stewart. “Federal employees in Virginia,” he wrote in an email to supporters, “wake up early, face punishing traffic and work hard to serve their nation and support their families. These workers need and deserve a pay raise."
