President Muhammadu Buhari has stressed the readiness of his government to persuade members of the Boko Haram sect to embrace peace. Buhari made the pledge on Friday when a delegation of residents of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, comprising of the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, paid him Christmas visit at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. He spoke barely 24 hours after he claimed that the Federal Government has technically won the war against insurgents. In an interview with the BBC, the President claimed that Boko Haram insurgents could no longer carry out “conventional attacks” against security forces or population centres, stressing that the sect had been reduced to fighting with improvised explosives devices and had been confined only to Borno State. However, Buhari on Friday assured that his government will put in place mechanisms to persuade members of the sect to allow peace reign, though he did not disclose the nature which the persuasion would take and those who would be involved. Buhari said, “On Boko Haram, this government is determined to make sure that we persuade them if they can be persuaded, we will use government institutions to persuade them to allow peace to reign.” The President recalled that from the analysis of the All Progressives Congress during its campaign, it was discovered that the country’s three biggest problems are security, unemployment of youths as well as bribery and corruption. http://www.zubbyblog.com/we-will-persuade-boko-haram-terrorists-to-embrace-peace-buhari/ |

President Muhammadu Buhari has called on Nigerians not to allow any group to hold the nation to ransom. In a message to Nigerians, especially Christians celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ, Buhari also called on Nigerians not to allow the current socio-economic and security challenges to dampen their expectations for a better Nigeria. He called on all Nigerians to rededicate themselves to the virtues, which Jesus Christ taught his followers. He said living in accordance with these virtues would help to make Nigeria a peaceful and united country. “We must never again allow any group to hold the nation to ransom under whatever guise. Let us also not allow current socio-economic and security challenges to dampen our expectations for a better Nigeria. “This administration has taken a number of measures to restore hope to our people. The 2016 budget defines our commitment to giving Nigeria a new lease of life. “Our change slogan is not a campaign gimmick but a promise that must be kept. We are determined to bring about tangible changes in the lives of our people. “In this regard, efforts will be intensified to recover stolen funds, block revenue leakages and enthrone due process, transparency and accountability,” he said. There was drama at a Federal High Court today, December 23 when Nnamdi Kanu, the director of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) made an objection in court. On calling the case, the court clerk had asked the accused person, Kanu alongside three others if they understand English, a procedure normally done before hearings. But instead of answering the clerk’s question, Kanu began by saying he has an objection to make. His counsel, Vincent Obetta in his advice urged his client to wait for the case to be fully mentioned before any further objection. After the clerk was done with calling of the case and the accused person, the judge, A. R. Mohammed said: “It will be good to appreciate and take into consideration the objection raised by the defendant.” At the judge’s permission, Nnamdi Kanu went further with his objection. He said: “Thank you very much my lordship, but my objection is that I will not receive a fair trial before this court. The information I got is that I will not receive a fair trial before this court. “I will not sacrifice the due process of law because of speedy court process over the principle of natural process on the altar of speedy release. In other words, I would rather remain in detention than subject myself to a trial that I know amounts to perversion of justice. “Your lordship, previous court rulings have been given by courts of competent jurisdiction in this country, Nigeria which were not carried out by the DSS.” The prosecuting counsel, Mohammed Diri having heard the objections of the defendant said: “First he objects trial by your lordship because he believes he is not going to get fair trail, two he said, the trial before your lordship will amount to perversion of justice.” “He said the rule of the law is clear and that the defendant may object to his trial at any time. “Your lordship before the defendant can object to his trial, he has to file an application objecting his trial before this court.” He said in that application the defendant is expected to exhibit special evidences why he should not be tried by a particular court. Diri said that this will enable the court and the prosecutors to properly reply to the defendant. “And this has not been done in this case,” he added.
