State governors elected on the platform of the
All Progressives Congress have resolved to do
all within their powers to ensure that Senator
Ike Ekweremadu is removed as the Deputy
President of the Senate, The PUNCH has learnt.
Our correspondent learnt that this was the
fallout of the two-hour meeting the governors
had with President Muhammadu Buhari at the
Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Tuesday. The Chairman of the Progressives Governors Forum and Governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha, had initially told State House correspondents at the end of the meeting that the governors had decided to intervene in the crisis in the National Assembly, without giving details of their intervention. But a source at the meeting told one of our correspondents that the consensus at the meeting was that it was an aberration for Ekweremadu, who is a Senator from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, to continue in office as Deputy President of the Senate. The source stated, “The governors sympathised with the President (Buhari) for working with a National Assembly that is largely seen as unfriendly. “Particularly, they observed that in the absence of the President of the Senate, the next person is his deputy. They therefore agreed that it was an anomalous situation for a PDP person to continue as the Deputy President of the Senate. “They sought and got the President’s permission to intervene in the matter in their own way. “They argued that the truth of the matter is that rarely is there any Senator that emerged without the backing of their governors, hence the governors have some levels of influence on the federal lawmakers.” Okorocha had, on Monday, said Ekweremadu should get ready to vacate his seat as the Deputy Senate President. Okorocha had added that a candidate of the APC, Benjamin Uwajumogu, who contested in the last Saturday’s rerun senatorial election in Imo State, would displace Ekweremadu as soon as he joined the Senate. The governor had said, “The position of Senator Ike Ekweremadu as the Deputy Senate President is at the moment under heavy threat because in no distant time, the APC senator-in- waiting from Imo State, Benjamin Uwajumogu, will take over the seat on the grounds that it is an aberration that a PDP senator from the South-East is deputy to an APC Senate President because, before now, APC could not produce a Senator from the South-East zone.” Our correspondent further learnt that Buhari at the meeting approved the release of N2bn each to all APC states. Another source, who attended the meeting, said the decision was based on what happened during the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan. The source claimed that Jonathan had, before leaving office, released N2bn each to the PDP states at the time from the Ecological Fund. He was alleged to have exempted APC states and PDP states, whose governors were at loggerheads with him, from the gesture. “That issue was brought to the President’s attention and he has ordered the release of N2bn each to the APC states that did not benefit during Jonathan’s administration,” the source said. To further cushion the effects of the downturn in economy on the states, Buhari was also said to have, during the meeting, approved that 50 per cent of money spent by states on federal roads be released to them. Okorocha had, while briefing State House correspondents after the governors’ meeting with Buhari, said the state governors from the ruling party were concerned about the incessant happenings in the National Assembly and had resolved to look into the matter. The two chambers of the National Assembly have continued to witness crisis since inception following the emergence of leaders, who were not the preferred candidates of the ruling party, the APC. Crisis is currently brewing in the House of Representatives following an allegation by a former Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Appropriation, Abdulmumin Jibrin, who accused the leadership of the House of padding the 2016 budget to the tune of N40bn. Okorocha added, “We have come to reassure Mr. President that the APC governors are solidly behind him in his fight against corruption; his fight against insurgents and all his laudable projects. “We are concerned about the incessant happenings in the National Assembly and we have taken it upon ourselves to look into the matter; that is the crisis in the National Assembly. “We are going to look into the matter because we need a strong and vibrant National Assembly to make things move fast in the country.” Okorocha defended the recent decision of the Nigeria Governors Forum for six state governors to travel to Germany for what they called “vocational training.” “There is nothing like jamboree trip. We are going to Germany because we cannot do everything here without exchanging ideas. Everything you do in your home and your business, you share ideas. “So, we want to see how they have done what they have done to succeed. It is the aspiration of Nigeria to be like other countries of the world,” he said. When asked if the trip would be funded by states, some of who owed workers’ salaries, Okorocha responded, “So, who will fund it, you!?” Despite the continued hardship in the states, the governor stated that a lot of improvement had been recorded in some states. He noted that what the states were getting from the Federation Account was close to what they were collecting when crude oil was selling above $100 per barrel. Other governors, who attended the meeting, included those of Kaduna, Kwara, Zamfara, Benue, Kano, Sokoto, Plateau, Niger, Ogun, Borno, Osun, Edo, Kogi, Adamawa, Nasarawa and Kebbi. The meeting was also attended by Vice- President Yemi Osinbajo; Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal; and the Chief of Staff to the President, Abba Kyari, among others. Ekeweremadu, however, declined to speak on the plans being hatched by the APC governors to remove him as the Deputy Senate President. One of his aides, who was contacted by one of our correspondents on Tuesday night, said he had no comments until he was well informed on the matter. http://punchng.com/apc-govs-meet-buhari-resolve-seek-ekweremadus-removal/ Cc mynd44 lalasticlala |
The PDP candidate, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, has commended what he described as ‘’uncommon courage” of Dr. Don Pedro Obaseki, the Accord governorship hopeful, for putting on hold his governorship ambition and collapsing his structure within the PDP. The PDP candidate stated this when he received Dr. Pedro Obaseki, a cousin of the APC candidate, Godwin Obaseki, a statement from the Ize-Iyamu Campaign said yesterday. Dr. Pedro Obaseki said he had to step down his ambition and endorse Ize-Iyamu because he realised that the PDP governorship candidate is the ‘’best candidate” for the election, describing Governor Oshiomhole and his cousin as unworthy of the people’s trust. Pedro, who was an APC governorship aspirant before his failed move to Accord, was quoted as describing as shocking, what he termed as ‘betrayal of trust’ on the part of his elder cousin, Godwin Obaseki. Pedro, who narrated his experience in the hands of the Economic Team leader of the outgoing government of Edo State, said that his ambition and programmes for Edo State tallied with that of Ize-Iyamu. ‘’I will rather support my brother, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu than go with Governor Adams Oshiomhole’s puppet candidate who is still going about with pampers”, Dr. Pedro Obaseki stated. ‘’I will rather support Pastor Ize-Iyamu, who represents the collective aspiration of Edo people than support Godwin Obaseki, who is being promoted by external political and economic investors.” He said that he would join the PDP candidate’s campaign team as from Monday, promising to expose the ‘’sins” of Oshimohle and his brother to the people of Edo State in the next few days. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/07/cousin-godwin-obaseki-cannot-trusted-pedro-obaseki/ Cc mynd44 lalasticlala

*I won't kill anybody at 83, Anenih tells Onojie of Opoji BENIN—THE Onojie of Opoji and Vice Chairman, Edo State Council of Traditional Rulers and Chiefs, HRH Ehidiamen Aidonojie I, yesterday, raised alarm, that he was being threatened by the former chairman, Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Chief Tony Anenih. The royal father said that his lawyers were already preparing a petition to be submitted to the Inspector General of Police and the state Police Commissioner Chris Ezike, on the issue, adding that it was “because I told the world that Esan Royal fathers never endorsed Ize-Iyamu.” But reacting, Chief Anenih, took a swipe at the Onojie of Opoji, Ehidiamen Aidonojie I, saying that he has never killed anyone in his life time even when he was a young person, let alone now that he is 83. Speaking to Vanguard on phone, Chief Anenih, said “Onojie of Opoji was one of the traditional rulers who received our candidate and the PDP's governorship candidate for the September election, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu. I know him very well. I never killed somebody in my life even as a Police Constable. Is it now that I will be 83 that I will kill somebody? I will not kill anybody in my life. I am a peaceful man. I will not kill an ordinary man, a big man, a traditional ruler or anybody. I will not even contemplate killing the Onojie of Opoji, why will I do that?” The Royal father, had alleged “He (Anenih) called me shouting at me ‘Your Highness, I am disappointed in you.’ I asked him what I had done, he kept shouting 'what has Oshiomhole (governor) done' for me in my life and I told him to stop insulting me even if he is Anenih, that I am a traditional ruler for Christ sake. “He said that was why he was not happy that I attended the function at the Onojie of Uromi’s palace. He went on to say that he thought we had settled, he said he thought we had settled our problem. But I told him that what we agreed was that he should make an Esan man governor but he never did it. “Rather what he brought to Esan people now was deputy governor and he still kept it in Uromi. And that was the same thing we have been complaining, all the ministers have come from his place in Uromi and in every election, he will ask Esan people to vote PDP. I asked why did he not move the deputy governorship to another community in Esanland, must it be Uromi? “He said I should be careful and he was warning me. First of all, it is an abomination to insult a Royal father like me. I have briefed my lawyers and we are petitioning the IG of Police. I have already informed the state Commissioner of Police and the DSS. Why must Esan people vote PDP when in Esan, most of us have been marginalised while Uromi remains the Israel," he said. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/07/anenih-threatening-life-edo-monarch-cries/

THE Obaseki family of Benin Kingdom, headed by the retired Justice of the Supreme Court, Justice Otutu Obaseki, has distanced itself from the activities of Pedro Obaseki, reiterating the resolve of the family to back Godwin Obaseki. A statement signed by Mr. William Obaseki, described the action of Pedro as shameful and embarrassing to the family, adding that the family will soon meet to decide their next line of action. Pedro Obaseki had recently defected to the PDP and declared his support for the governorship candidate of the PDP, Pastor Ize-Iyamu to the chagrin of the family members. But reacting swiftly, the family said “We wish to inform the general public that the family disassociates themselves from the mischievous actions of Pedro Obaseki. “We hereby reaffirm Godwin Enogheghase Obaseki as the only recognized candidate who has the blessings of the head of Obaseki Ogbeideoyoo family, Chief Justice Andrew Otutu Obaseki, Justice of the Supreme Court (RTD) and the Obaseki of Benin Kingdom for the September 10, 2016, governorship election. “And we urge all Edo sons and daughters to support him so that he can take Edo State to the next level. Nobody should be distracted with the activities of Pedro; our blessings remain with Godwin and Gods willing he will win” it stated. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/07/obaseki-family-disowns-pedro-urge-edo-people-vote-godwin/ 1. The Independent National Electoral Commission has rejected the name of candidate submitted for the governorship election of Edo State by the Sen. Ali Modu Sheriff faction of the Peoples Democratic Party. The commission said that it decided to reject the list based on the fact that it didn’t monitor the primary that produced the faction’s governorship candidate, Mr. Matthew Iduoriyekwemwen. Deputy Director in charge of Publicity and Voters’ Education at the commission’s headquarters, Mr. Nick Dazang, stated this in a text message to our correspondent late on Tuesday night. He said that the commission had accepted the name submitted by the Chairman of the party’s National Caretaker Committee, Sen. Ahmed Makarfi. Pastor Ize Iyamu is the candidate of the Makarfi-led faction of the party. He said that the commission had received names of governorship candidates from 18 other political parties, apart from the PDP. He said, “As at this evening, we received 19 candidates from 19 political parties for the Edo governorship election. “This includes the candidate of the Makarfi-led faction of the PDP. We received the candidate of the Makarfi-led faction because of the Port Harcourt Court judgement plus the fact that we monitored its primaries.” Other political parties listed include AA, ACD, ACPN, APC, APGA, LP, MPPP, NCP, NNPP, PDC, PPA, PPN, SDP, UPP and YDP. The two factions had on Monday submitted names of their governorship candidates for the state to the to the commission. Both men and their followers are currently locked in legal battle over the leadership of the opposition party. The deadline for the submission of names of governorship candidates by political parties for the governorship election according to the timetable released by the commission was midnight of Tuesday. The election holds on September 10. Spokesperson for the Sheriff camp, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, had told our correspondent on the telephone that the party has done the needful. Deputy National Chairman of the group, Dr. Cairo Ojugboh, said his faction was relying on the court order that ordered that only the Sheriff group should be allowed to submit names of candidates for the Edo and Ondo governorship elections. He said he was sure that the candidate that emerged at the primary conducted by the Sheriff faction, Mr. Matthew Iduoriyekwemwen, would make the INEC final list. He said his faction would contest the action of the commission, adding that the pronouncement by the court was clear in the matter. http://punchng.com/edo-gov-inec-rejects-sheriffs-lists/

This is the current state of Ekpoma axis of the Benin-Lokoja road. For the past week motorist have had to divert and pass through the Ekpoma township road just to bypass the 3 bad spots on the express road. This has given rise to extortion of motorists by local youths who demand money from motorist to enable them take an alternative route through the town. Its a different story however for the heavy duty trucks as they have been denied passage through the town roads as it is feared that they will cause damage to the town roads. This has left the trucks stranded on the road. Some youths had been working on the bad portion to enable the trucks pass for a token, an arrangement that worked well until some bad eggs infiltrated the youths and began to forcefully collect 3000 naira per truck. Soldiers had to disband them forcefully. THE CURRENT SITUATION With the youths gone, the trucks are stuck. Two days now. The truck drivers and conductors are seen pumping water out of the road and placing woods on the track to help them pass through. That is how bad it is. WHO IS TO BLAME? Before so-called wailers and zombies jump in to apportion blames and name names, here's my take. The past government failed to see the importance of the road for 16 years. The contract for the dualization was only awarded in 2014. This was depite the fact that Edo State produced two Ministers of Works in the past who stayed in office for more than 10 years culmultatively. Why could they not fix the road, even when its in their state of origin? Now, since the loss of the previous government at the polls, the contractors handling the dualization of the road have left site. I ask the new government; Why? In the past, FERMA used to be active on the road fixing potholes. But since January 2015 they have been missing in action. The potholes on the road are innumerable! The last time I drove at night from Benin to Ekpoma, I lost 3 tyres. I thank God I was able to trek home with my life intact. Although it is a Federal Road, the state government can do something about the bad spots. After all the Governor passes this road every weekend to the village. The last time the road was this bad, it was a private individual in the person of Bishop Okpebholo of Church of God Mission Uromi that fixed the road. Why can't the state government intervene? I know that the Government has agents all over Nairaland... Please show these pictures to your ogas. After thought: Pastor Ize-Iyamu Mr Obaseki Any candidate that fixes the bad portion will have my vote, that of my wife and any friend I can influence. And also many other votes in that area.
