It has turned out a triple jeopardy for Joy Aibangbee whose love for the United States of America has seen her locked in a legal battle to recover her savings from her lover, Austin Giwa, who turned out a dupe. She had banked on his promise that with N400,000, he would ensure that her dream of going to the US to live would become a reality. Her 23-year-old boyfriend had assured her that he had all the necessary contacts to get her the required papers that would get her into the US.

She had no cause to doubt him. The duo had been dating for a while and in fact, had firmed up plans to marry each other in the near future. They had reasoned that with Aibangbee in the US, Giwa would soon join her and the two shall consummate their marriage and live happily thereafter.

Aibangbee never knew that it was all a plan. A tall plan that would later cost her money and emotional trauma. She never knew that her fiancé is nothing but a crook with devious intention to extort money from her. Like a gullible lover that she was, she had handed over to Giwa her entire savings, so that with her money and his self-acclaimed “international connections,” their dreams of living together as husband and wife would find an anchor.

He collected two passport photographs from his unsuspecting lover which he would use in procuring the travelling documents for her. His moves and constant assurances had reinforced Aibangbee’s confidence that indeed, Giwa meant business.

But unknowingly to her, like most dreams, theirs was a pipe one, fabricated on the altar of deceit.
Yesterday, she told the Egor Chief Magistrate’s Court in Benin City, how Giwa allegedly duped her of N400,000 under the pretence of procuring travelling documents for her to the US.

According to the prosecution, led by Thomas Omokaro, the accused committed the offence between June and December 2010 around S/T Road, Uselu, Benin City.

The accused person was also charged with stealing N400,000 from Aibangbee.
Aibangbee had testified that the accused person collected the money in different instalments at various times and took her to Oshodi in Lagos State in a bid to introduce her to one of his aunties who would perfect how she would travel to the US. Blinded by her naivety or desperation to go to “akata” (as America and Europe are called in Edo State) Aibangbee kept believing the stories of her future husband.

To further the “seriousness and sincerity” of the travel plans, Giwa had asked Aibangbee to follow him to Lagos to meet his aunt who was the go-between him and American embassy officials that would help with procuring visa for her. It was all a decoy. There was neither a sister anywhere nor a contact to interface with American embassy officials.

But in her narrative, Aibangbee lamented that on getting to Oshodi, the accused person pretended to be putting calls through to his aunt and eventually requested that they return to Benin City having failed to locate her.
She also testified that she raised the alarm upon her sensing that Giwa had some sinister plans.
Counsel to the accused person, Efosa Okoro, applied for a date within which to study the case file as he had just been briefed by the accused person to handle the matter for him.

Consequently, the Chief Magistrate, Mrs. Taiye Omoruyi, adjourned the case till August 13.
As from that day, Aibangbee will engage in the battle of redeeming whatever she could from her three major concerns: her funds, her American dream and her marital future.
