hakings: Thanks very much!!. We all have been fooled to think English word must have meaning in our native languages. We no longer remember we are a unique people that had nothing to do with English language as ours before the 13th century. The truth is African languages left unpolluted are richer than English, and as a result English can't compete with them in lexicon. We had much more in our vocabulary before Europeans terrorists arrived Africa. It's only after our defeat and after we were forced to adopt English as our language that we began losing the richness in our native languages. There're still many words in Igbo that have no way of saying it in English. Even in Pidgin, words like "Na waah" have no way of saying it in English. The best you can do is explain it. 4 Likes |

Hello there's a huge mistake all of you are making. @OP you don't just assume any stuff traditional to few non-English ethnicity around the globe to officially have a direct English word. English is a second language here just like the rest of the world, only 4 recognized English accents/versions exists and these are the only places where English is native: British English, Australian English, then American/Canadian English. Since none of these countries fold clothes to put on their head to carry basket or loads, you can't possibly get an exact word referring to that in the very same dictionary these countries produce. Rather you might get something close, ie whatever they themselves use in place of osuka. If they keep adding various traditional artifacts to their dictionary, pages will be endless. Have you gone to South Africa to know the English name for a wooden material some tribes use to check virginity of their ladies? But of course it has it's native know to them and you don't expect US or brits to make a word and add such to their dictionary. Your question is more like "what's the English word for agbo(yoruba medicine) or ewedu?" 1 Like |

tolufase: Amala is not Yam flour. Not after it is made into Amala. You can loosely translate Elubo or Lafun to Yam flour, but even that technically wouldn’t be correct. It is just an improvised translation. Moimoi isn’t bean pudding either, lol. 1 Like |
