I think the reason for all this was as a result of the native africans who were just learning english for the first time so they embraced the white man's language over enthusiastically and probably loved the oyinbo more than they loved themselves. So as a result of that, they abandoned there so called old and "primitive" ways so as to become "mordern", therefore they started naming themselves and children names like 'Pillar', 'Government', 'Polycarp white', 'Hitler' and so on and so forth. They remind of what the late Fela used to call "Gentleman".

You guys should also be worried about non-Nigerian names such as :
Hassan
Abdul.
Kasrim.
Kassim.
Yusuf.
Idris.
Waheed
Habiba.
Teslim.
Hakeem.
Mustapha
Jelili
And other useless mid-east names that means nothing in Nigerian culture.

Andre dont be so naive. The names u listed out are muslim names, and ofcourse there are thousands of muslims in nigeria, so they are allowed to name their children according to the islamic rites.

You guys are the ones that are naive. Most of the names listed as funny names are christian names e.g Praise-What is funny to call someone praise God, shortened to praise. Success-God has brought success to my life, Josephat etc are all christian names and goes a long way to show ones christian belief and up-bringing. More funny names are:
Nurudeen.
Zubier or Zubaru
Maleek
Taofeek
Ahmed
Lukman
ETC.
Re: Nigerian Names: How Funny Is Yours? by Cute500(f): 4:49pm On Sep 19, 2010
Andre. im sure you have one of those PRAISE names.its cool tho. In todays world, well in the Nigerian world, noboby finds the name Maleek, or Ahmed funny like you have listed above, but if someone walked into a room with a name called ''GOD'S BREAD'' or ''MIGHTY GOD'' i would definately look twice. grin

Senator Iyere Ihenyen was born in Lagos in the 80s, but hails from Esan-West L.G.A., Ekpoma, Edo State, Nigeria. And if you are wondering if he is a Senator of the Republic, he is not (at least yet)! Senator is his first name! He writes poetry, short fiction and engages in literary research.
