The women olympic marathon was won by Gelana of Ethiopia. The efforts the runners put was a delight to watch. I had hope to see a Nigerian representative Esther Obiekwe(a banker by profession),participating in the race but i never got to see her!

A beautiful statement by the commentator while the spectators waited for the last runner Caitriona Jennings to cross the finish line was that "BRITISH PEOPLE CELEBRATE DETERMINATION".

My question is why is there not a single Marathon race in Nigeria, given that America has more than 500 marathons in a year and Ghana has 2 marathon races annually.

Accra Milo Marathon is an annual event held in Accra, the capital city of Ghana. It has been held since 1987 and is still moving ahead. Winners of this event are usually sent to compete in the Amsterdam Marathon. It starts at the Point in Nungua and the finish line is at the Dansoman Keep Fit Club. It is normally run in September but sometimes October when the need arises.... source wikipedia.

The Accra International Marathon is an annual marathon event held in Accra, the capital of Ghana. As well as the full marathon, it also stages a half marathon. The race starts in the beach town of Prampram, continues through the port city of Tema before finishing at the popular La Pleasure Beach Hotel. Many international runners also join to participate.[1] The 2010 race will be staged on 26 September and will be the fourth Accra International Marathon to be held.[2]... source wikipedia

Why can't Nigeria have a full marathon 42km instead of the 21km that was sponsored in the past by MTN and then GLO

Why did Globacom sign a 5 year sponsorship deal with AFN only to renegade after hosting the edition twice?

Till date Globacom has refused to give any official explanation for cancelling the sponsorship.

Please note that the last Lagos 1/2marathon held in 2009 had over 25,000 Nigerians taking part in the race. Surely Nigerians showed interest in the race... why Globacom opted out is such a mystery.

So the Giant of Africa does not have a single marathon event, with a population of over 170million...

Is it that our leaders don't appreciate the value of encouraging such mass participation sport?

As we watch in disbelief Nigeria's performance at the London Olympics... please note a lot has to do with the negative mindsets of our leaders towards sports in general.
