A Muslim lawyer in Egypt is arguing that, because Christians believe Jesus is the Son of God, they are clearly polytheistic infidels, and not the “Christians,” the “Nassara,” that the Koran speaks tolerably of, on occasion. Accordingly, Egypt's Copts, because they profess the Trinity, must be barred from having any say regarding the new constitution. “Lawyer Requests Exclusion of Copts from Constitutional Committee for being ‘Polytheists,’" from Coptic Solidarity, July 30:

Sherif Gadallah, a lawyer from Alexandria has submitted a report to the public prosecutor, against the president of the court of appeal, the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Mosque, the interim Pope of Alexandria as well as President Mohamed Morsy requesting the exclusion of Copts from the committee in charge of forming Egypt's constitution, claiming that Orthodox Copts are not representative of Egypt's Christian population, because they are simply not "nassara"; a substitute term employed by Salafists to refer to people of Christian faith, this term has developed pejorative connotations, being used by those who loathe Christians the most; the use of which often justified by the fact that the term "Christian" was never mentioned in the Quran.

According to Mr. Gadallah Orthodox Copts are not "Nassara, or even Christian"; they can be counted among the "polytheists" which makes them non-representative of Egypt's Christians.

Mr. Gadallah bases his request on purely Islamic grounds. He states that the essence of all heavenly religions is that "Allah is one and there is no god but Him", and that the prophets of Allah, Moses, Eissa [Arabic for Jesus] and Mohamed, are but humans sent by Allah to pass along His message to His Creatures, so if a certain denomination of a certain religion claims that their prophet is the "son of God" or "is God", it is then considered infidel and a dissident of that religion. Gadallah goes on to ask the Grand Mufti to have Al-Azhar issue a clear statement about the verdict of Sharia regarding Copts who claim that Jesus is the son of God.

while Gadallah has his viewpoint, it should be assumed as the viewpoint of Islam. Even if the grand mufti of Al Azhar states exactly as the lawyer have stated, it is still individual opinion. Even if all muslims were to state the same, it will be individual muslim who has agreed to that opinion. You will have to look into the Quran and hadith that agree with what Quran says about Christians to then determine if the individual opinion of the muslim is in accordance to islam or not.

While I am certain that the muslims will not collectively agree on a wrong position, I am equally certain that the national polity/politics of Egypt is not the same as Islam.

Allah says about the Christians [copts and others] there food is allowed for you so is their {pretty and chased] women as wives. It is therefore unimaginable that they will be classified in the same position as the Hindu, Buddhist whose food/slaughter and women are forbidden to muslims.

frosbel. Relax. When Islam settles big time in your neck of the wood [tribal land], the food and the women of the remaining christians will be okay to chop.

@Sweetnecta, we will remind you when the Copts have no part in the government of Egypt because as much as you claim view point of lawyer and grand mufti, it will be popular opinion leading to more persecution of the Copts.

What will you say then? Propaganda or lies. Let's wait and see, it will not take long.

i think morsi made the right move.priority should be stability before imposing radical changes.besides the military still wields enormous powers which is evident with tantawi retaining his portfolio.it will be erroneous to claim there are no christians in his cabinet.iskhandar zakhari isnt just a christian, she's a devoted one.one representative is indeed small for christians who account for 10% of the population but when you take into account the fact that the ruling muslim brotherhood has only 4 representatives in the cabinet, you start to understand the political dynamics involved

Spoken like a true apologetic. Until these people are finished off before you acknowledge their marginalization. You obviously do not know or are carefully sidestepping the issues they face. Maybe you need to research some more before posting.

what if it does not happen, will become muslim? What happened stayed in Egypt. I am not an egyptian and i will not be bent out of shape as long as egypt keeps on keeping on.

I am a nigerian and i dont pay tremendous attention to nigerian politics. Nigerians need to pay attention to nigeria first and we all need to do so since we have a lackey at the helm.

So if Egypt keeps on keeping on at the expense of the copts then everything is fine. At least we know where you stand on that issue. The Assyrian and Syriac Christians are going through the same persecution but its Ok. Nothing must stand in the way of the caliphate.

this is too bad, that region is already unstable now dis guy is bringing religious buhaha an is sure to unsettle thing. Both copts and muslims came together and pursued mubarak, why cant they come together to lead? I hope this very intolerant idea is not adopted, because if it is the vatican just has a new situation to make a speech on since copts are catholics and the unstable situation will worsen when the copts feel sidelined.
I wish them peace.
