I'm an Accountant, so may not be able to answer all your questions. But you may search for the thread 'Total Oil and Gas workers'. The technical guys are there, although most of them are not Nigeria-based.

Sure, like you rightly pre-empted, I wont disclose my current place of work.
I personally hold that Oil & Gas sector still remain of the most merit-driven in terms of employment, especially for the multi-national operators. The Nigerian ones, to a considerable extent, also value merit. I have brilliant friends, from poor homes, knowing no one, getting jobs in Shell, Chevron, Saipem etc. I always quantify merit in oil sector as not less 90%, based on what I have seen. In fact, over all, I think this pessimistic mentality of Nigerians that you cannot get job without knowing anyone is far exaggerated. I got my current job from an advert in Guardian newspaper!

The major constraint in the sector is the competition. It is highly competitive. You compete with a lot of bright, equally qualified folks for few openings, which means you have to be on top of your game, plus a stroke of luck. I once got invite for Economist opening in Total E&P. 32 of us were shortlisted from Nigeria, about 10 others ferried in from UK and US schools (Nigerians doing their Mscs & MBAs there) and we were competing for a single space! You can imagine the competition. At the end of the day, none of us 32 from Nigeria landed the job but one of the guys from US, not principally because he was schooling in US, but because he outperformed us in the selection process. In 2008, more than 200 of us jostled for Shell commercial openings, but only 7 were picked, and of that 7, there were just 4 immediate spaces, meaning they put the remaining 3 on hold till almost a year later and 4 resumed immediately. My friend and classmate in the university, a very brilliant dude, made the list of 4 and he had no more than Bsc Econs from a Nigerian university(then), no experience other than NYSC in a bank and knew nobody.

So the major challenge is teh competition. The sector is very competitive.

Of course, there are long legs too, but I personally dont like to dwell on that, becasue it is not only minimal, it is very defeatist and I don't believe that hinders you from getting your own space on merit. If there are 10 openings, I'm sure 9 of them will be filled on merit, and that's fair enough for one to work for. The pervasive you-cant-get-a-job-without-knowing-any-big-man mentality among Nigerians irritates me, so I like not to dwell on it.

However, there is what is called networking in the industry(and beyond), which to me is fair. It is especially applicable among the independent players in teh industry and hardly work in established MNCs like Shell and co which have standard, global recruitment procedure which must be followed.

Networking is about recommending someone you know can do a job, and saving the company the time and cost of going through the rigours of advertising and all that. It should also be noted that even recommendation is not automatic placement. Your recommendee will go through the normal process of interview and all that, will compete with a couple of others, and selection will be based on his performance in the selection process, not who is recommending. At least 3 of my Ife circle of friends got jobs in my former place of work via this channel(I recommended them, passed their CVs across to right quarters and, being good chaps themselves, they scaled the recruitment process, except 3 - 2 didnt scale the test, 1 rejected the offer for pay reason). And 1 of them is also on his way to my new place too.

But mind you, all these are easy because these guys not only have rich CVs(most of them First Class grads and multiple award-winning Chartered Accountants), but also interview specialists.

Networking is also about having access to right information. It's not all the jobs you see advertised in newspapers. In my former place of work, around 2009, I once overheard our HR lady talk, more or less like a joke, to my boss that 'XX, we need chartered accountants o, if you have right candidate, abeg forward the CV', while my boss joked it off that 'can you pay 10m for them?". Having overheard that, I just sent an IM to the lady few minutes later and told her 'zzz, i get some brilliant chaps, chartered accountants and they wont cost you up to 4m pa'. She asked me to send their CVs and I immediataley picked my mobile phone and called 2 of my friends(one was in GTB, the other in P&G then, asked them to send my CVs immediately and within 1 hour, our HR had their CVs). Both of them scaled the test and interviews, and one got the job(the other rejected it on the ground that he couldn't take 4m. He is there today.

I'm sure you wont call that long leg, but access to right info (networking).

thanks jarus for the response...rily incisive.
i know my major problem is the 'phobia' of graduating and not having 'immediate' opportunities to practice, having to wait for this 'limited' openings...having to 'beg' and manage sumtin until it gets beta despite all my hopes...already facing dat in IT not to talk of when i finally graduate..i fink i'd jst chill and pray.....
Re: Question And Answers For Oil And Gas Jobs by sawyer89: 10:19pm On Sep 15, 2012
Oga Jarus had said it all. I used to think you can't get a good paying job without having a god father or a well-to-do Uncle until I met a beneficiary of the merit driven selection process of a highly revered MNC.
I think the most important thing is to be hardworking and always preparing-mastering aptitude and interview skills. Not forgeting the basic-graduating with a good grade.

Jarus,

Do Mathematicians work in Oil firm? If yes, as what?
Re: Question And Answers For Oil And Gas Jobs by Jarus(m): 4:33pm On Sep 16, 2012
1stknight: Jarus,

Do Mathematicians work in Oil firm? If yes, as what?

Pls modify your post to Jarus.

Sure, one with degree in Maths can get a job in an oil firm.

1, Maybe with experience elsewhere and coming in as experienced hire, in which case subject of study matters little

2, Not sure, but I think some MNCs include sciences generally in general entry level recruitments

The Tech guys may be able to shed more light.
