If you study a course that requires 5 years(full time).
Each year is equivalent to a session,which means there are 10 semesters in all)

The brief break between 1ST and 2ND semester is called semester break(usually 2 or 3 weeks)

@topic: in very simple term, 'session' is a calendar year, you are expected to move onto another level after each session.
Semester, on its part is like 'terms' we have in secondary schools. That explains it completely. Whiile we have 3 terms, we have 2 semesters in one session

In addition to what has been written. Semester is a french word that means half of a year (6 months), while a session is a combination of 2 semester.
