I will start with the obvious-
We won 1994, 14 years after our first win in 1980.
We won 3 silver medals and one bronze in between.
Between 1994 and 2008 is 14yrs and we have won 3 bronze and 1 silver since then.

In 1994 we won with Christian Chukwu, capt of the winning team as the assistant coach, this year Augustine Eguavon, the assistant capt and capt for the final match (in the absence of injured Keshi) is the assistant coach.

In 1994 we trained in Sweden before the ANC and everybody was complaining about the perceived cold, this year we trained in Malaga, Spain and everybody tells us the weather is too cold too.

We were in group B in 1994 and we are in group B now.

In 1993 we won Under-17 WC and a year later we won the ANC.
We won Under-17 WC last year, so go figure.

Now, the outrageous, Brazil won the world cup in 1994 after 24yrs, same year we won. No WC this year, so at the last world cup Italy won it after-you guessed it 24years!!!

Now the completely outrageous at Euro 92 the last Euros before ANC 94, Denmark won against all odds and in 2004 the last euros Greece won against all odds too.

And now the ridiculous, we will win in the final with Nsofor (who is the new kid on the block) scoring two goals in the final against Ivory Coast, just like Amunike (the new kid on the block at the time), did in 1994.

So I say, we cannot have these coincidences without the expected outcome coming to pass!!!

The African Nations Cup is almost upon us and Berti has named his team all seems set and ready to go.

The Eagles set up has been surprisingly professional (or near professional-there is always room for improvement) in it's preparation for Nations Cup 2008.Well done to Berti and NFA.

From most web posts (including this one), it is clear that Nigerian fans expect nothing but GOLD and rightly so because 14 years is quite a long time to go without winning anything.

While we all hope for the GOLD, I must warn against expecting too much from the Eagles. Yes the players, Berti and the NFA all want to win. But there are many other factors that can come into play. The fans support, the food, the mindset (psychological preparation), experience, team spirit and of course Luck (or what we Nigerians call “God's grace”) are all little things that can add up.

So if we do not get to Accra on Feb 10, we must not despair or start calling for Berti sack, this is because there is bigger task ahead-qualifying for SA 2010-and we can only get there by maintaining some level of consistency and stability in the team.
