It is evident that we all have individual differences- no two persons are exactly alike in every sense and as such, we all have to be considerate, polite and respectful when dealing with people. To be polite, respectful and considerate with those we may call our friends or with total strangers, courtesy should play an important role in our lives. In a world that is continually menaced by corruption, terrorism, financial crisis, war, bad governance et al, courtesy may be too easily dismissed as a “soft” issue or perhaps a luxury to be addressed after the urgent problems are solved, but courtesy is the greatest need in all areas because realistically, common courtesy is relevant in our daily lives, it is how we separate ourselves from barbarians, for to show courtesy is to show love. A typical example is how we feel “absolutely high” when on the receiving end of any of; “hello”, “thank you”, “please” and many others. Therefore, being polite should be on everyone’s agenda through the course of the day else, our co-existence will be fleeting and fragile. Aside bringing peace and profound love, courtesy helps people in many other ways and in fact, a courteous man is everyone’s friend and as a result, gets favour easily from people. Courtesy is perceived as one of the attitudes education should instil in people. Educationists refer to it as the hidden curriculum. Even though it is sometimes hard to cultivate and put into practice, we should always try to extend our hands in friendship and clasp firmly onto the outstretched hands reaching for ours then, we should reveal a smile, utter a greeting and acknowledge people around in such a way. It may seem the other way but truly, everyone we come across in our lives, has a role to play in it......so let’s strive to make it a meaningful and joyful one by imbibing courtesy all the time....“life is short, but there is always time enough for courtesy”- Ralph Waldo Emerson.
