Nigeria and France go head to head in the Quarter-Finals of the on-going FIFA U-17 Women World Cup 2012 in Azerbaijan.

The Flamingoes topped Group A with 7 points drawing Canada 1-1, defeating Azerbaijan 11-0 and Colombia 3-0 scoring 15 goals in the process and conceding only a goal.

France on the other hand, were runners-up in Group B amassing 5 points in it's 3 games with 0-0, 1-1 and 10-2 results against USA, DPR Korea and Gambia respectively. They scored a total of 11 goals and conceded only 2 goals in the group stage.

Both teams play possession-based attacking football with the Nigerians relying more on power and speed while the "Les Bleuettes" depend on nimbleness and creativity.

In Chinwendu Ihezuo and Halimatu Ayinde, Nigeria boasts two of the tournaments most prolific scorers as the duo scored 6 goals and 4 goals respectively accounting for 10 of their team's 15 goals in the group stage while the "Les Bleuettes" goals were more evenly distributed with Lea Declercq (3 goals), Kadidiatou Diani (2 goals) and Pauline Cousin (2 goals) accounting for 7 of their 11 goals.

The match will be played in the 15,000 capacity Eighth Kilometre District Stadium in Baku and kick-off time is 4pm Nigerian time.

So what's your prediction?. . . drop your comments

My big fear is that we may again concede first against the French. The game will come down to tactics from the bench, and the Nigerian bench isnt the best. I see our gals playing with their heart, but the French may just be too tactical for us. If we get lucky, we may win.

My brother, I understand your point. But Nigeria had a very easy ride through the group stages. The match against Canada is my only measue of the team so far. While our strength is in attack, we forget easily how weak our defence can be. At U17, its a good thing because we can intimidate the opponents. But these French gals will come at us tomorrow. I expect the coach to at least bring back Yetunde Adeboyejo to roughen things upfront and hold play well. Everytime Nigeria gets attacked tommorow, I will be scared. If we score a goal with one of our first 5 shots on goal, then we may have it easy. But France will not allow us get into their face. Thats a fact. They are more technically gifted than other teams we've played.

Yes i know it going to be a tough game and i was comparing both team according to their previous group stages matches... Read this....
Nigeria have been something of a revelation at Azerbaijan 2012 – confident, free-scoring and fast-paced, but when they face France tomorrow coach Peter Dedevbo plans to present an even slicker Flamingoes outfit.

They racked up an impressive 15 goals over three games in Group A, but while the majority may have come in their 11-0 victory over the hosts, they were far from efficient with their chance-taking, an issue Dedevbo is keen to eradicate before their quarter-final.

“We create chances and that’s the most important thing, as there are some teams that play and don’t create chances, and if you don’t create you don’t score goals,” the Nigerian coach told FIFA.com. “I’m happy as at least my team are creating chances, but what we want to do is work harder on getting the opportunities and taking them too.

The statistics back up his frustrations. Even though 15 goals is a more-than-healthy tally - fellow Group A qualifiers Canada scored three, they had a monumental 92 shots. Just 47 hit the target however, while they hit the post four times against the North Americans, on top of a host of missed sitters against Azerbaijan.

“In our first game against Canada we had all the chances but we threw them away. After that match against Canada we pretty much went back to the drawing board to work on our finishing, which we did, and it paid off somewhat against Azerbaijan,” he said.

We don’t know how many chances we will make, but if we create five chances against France we want to take four.

Peter Dedevbo, Nigeria coach

“One thing that I will want to take into the quarter-finals is to continue to improve our quality in front of goal. We don’t know how many chances we will make, but if we create five chances against France we want to take four.”

It’s an efficiency that Dedevbo hopes will help see them not fall at the quarter-final stage like they did at Trinidad and Tobago 2010, when he was also in charge of the team. They lost in an epic 6-5, two-hour encounter with eventual champions Korea Republic, a game where they similarly dominated in terms of shots on goal but were undone by their profligacy.

Sarah Nnodim and Oluchi Ofoegbu told FIFA.com earlier in the tournament that they have learnt from the mistakes of that game, and Dedevbo similarly feels he has grown since the experience. “The Trinidad and Tobago World Cup really brought on my views about women’s football and big stage competitions. We lost in the quarter-finals, but we have done what can to correct the areas that caused that defeat here in Azerbaijan.”

One thing he will have on his side is two of the tournament’s most prolific goal scorers in Chinwendu Ihezuo and Halimatu Ayinde, with the former playing a part in 11 of their goals so far. On the pair, Dedevbo said: “I’m happy with their performances, it’s great that they are both scoring and providing goals.”

The Flamingoes’ speed and power is enough to trouble any side, but the nimbleness and creativity of France will be a much weightier task for the African side than they've faced, with Les Bleuettes battle-hardened after negotiating their way through a challenging Group B.

Even so, Dedevbo declared his confidence for the game at 8km Stadium. “We respect every team that came to this world cup, I’d like to they they will respect us too. We are good at working against any team, in terms of France they have amazing quality but when we meet in the quarter-finals we want to present a different team than that who faced Colombia.”

Thank you very much for bringing up this issue. The report is flimsy! Though I doubt the age of some of our players, but I can vouch for 70% of the team being U17. I recently posted the picture of some of the team players for people to judge. I will also repost some of the pictures if I have time.
As for the 'proof' of the silly reporter, it is very flimsy and too thin. In fact, he got most of the proofs the wrong way round. His first evidence is that Blessing is the younger sister of Victoria. He concludes this because Blessing says 'God go make you BIGGER sis. Luv you to death'. He concludes that means she was referring to her elder sister (illiteracy). God making someone bigger doesnt mean they are your bigger sis.
I think sometimes we need to be wary of lazy Nigerian journalists who always try to bring down our players.

Re: Nigeria Vs France: (3 - 5) On Pens In U-17 Women's World Cup 4th Oct 2012 by Nobody: 3:19am On Oct 04, 2012
The Flamingoes should be super tactical in this game. As the French team has the height advantage, I expect our team to play more ground/mid-air balls. Playing high balls wouldn't be effective against the French. I think Coach Dedevbo should play two defensive midfielders to neutralize the nimbleness/creativity of the French midfielders. If the Flamingoes use their superior speed and strength coupled with better finishing and tight marking, they will emerge victorious.

@Ola_pluto,

1. I doubt you can vouch for any of the team members except you know them, and their parents and when they were actually born.
2. I'm not sympathetic to a cause where we shamelessly cheat and fail to realise we're hurting ourselves. First look at the team against Columbia, I told myself this is just too ridiculous and glaring.
3. The reporter has done his bit and it's left for us to also as people of integrity do our bit. How? Whoever went to primary or secondary school with the lady in question can say on this page. I've always said these things are easy to find out. Nigeria's goal keeper in Coach Tela's team played U17 @ age 30. A reporter went to Taiwo Ogunjobi with irrefutable evidence, yet Taiwo Ogunjobi refused to take him out of the team. I was in Primary 1 when Festus Odini was in Primary Six. In fact we used to call him "Boda De-Boy", yet the same was in U17 with Kanu, Oruma, Babayaro's team in 93. That year I slightly crossed 17. People that know Kanu will tell you he's closer to 50 now, yet claiming 36. Julius Aghahowa's wife was my wife's mate in the Uni. She got to Aghahowa when she was in year 3, and by then she was not a teenager. Julius played U20, after he was alledged to have served in the Police..... Gbenga Okunnowo, Ugbade, Furo-Iyenemi, etc are cases I know.
4. Truth is, we are doing ourselves disservice. We're not going to win this cup, so why cheat in the first place? There are some true and talented U17s who deserves the spots some of these girls are ILLEGALLY occupying, yet we rob their future and Nigeria's. These current girls will not even make it to U20, yet the true U17s who should have been discovered and taken by foreign clubs to help nurture their talent further woun't see them. Guess what happens, we keep getting worse as a team. Super Eagles has "graduated" to a point where we're not sure of qualification for Nation's cup, U21 teams struggle at international competition, despite cheating with 30 year olds against teenagers (I mean France recently defeated our old men)
