Someone else is now claiming the fifth man later succumbed to gunshot wounds and died. . . . As a journalist I went on an investigative journalism and my findings was that d guys are not thieves but cultist on a mission to kill the leader of their cult group. These guys are from rich homes, two of them move on jeeps. They were incensed by the overbearing attitude of their cult leader and decided to topple him. Not knowing that the place was in the radar by some resolute vigilante boys following persistent handset theft and rape, five of them embarked on a journey around 3am with their axe and knife on hand trying to gain entry into their targets abode. The target who is their cult leader was however sensitive enough to notice their presence and started screaming - 'thief, thief' which attracted the attention of the vigilante who rounded them off. One out of the five cult guys escaped allbeit with a gunshot wound he sustained from the vigilante while trying to escape. It was this 5th cult guy that escaped but later died in Agip that narrated the ordeal before he died that gave us the tip that they were set up as thieves instead of an equally bad CULTIST. More facts emerge. . . . seems these guys were set up. . . . Slaughter of Uniport Students: Monarch, 13 others Arrested, More Details The brutal beating, burning to death and video taping of the four University of Port Harcourt students whose names were reported Ugonna, Lloyd, Tekana and Chidiaka was the result of official vigilante work setup by the community and authorized by the Rivers State government. As gathered, the community of Aluu had experienced series of robberies and rampart killings – of which include rape of women and other violent crimes. The community which has been describe as a low income area populated by ex-militants – was said to take the rampart armed robberies and killings by the bull – and in so doing the vigilante group set up a heightened watch over the community. On the morning of the given day, believed to be Thursday or Friday [October 4 or 5, 2012], the community got information that the robbers had entered the community and had begun operations. Information had it that the robbers were tipped of a wealthy man that had arrived to the community. Within the information of robbers having arrived to the community, the vigilante men were said to have blocked all entrances and exits of the community. At about 4:45am, the boys were nabbed by the vigilante men. They were five [5] at the time the vigilante approached them but one managed to escape. The four boys were then dragged to the community head [Monarch] – where they were presented to him and questioned. During questioning, the stories of the four boys were said not to tally together. And so the beatings began. They were undressed and moments later they offered a “confession”. Following the said “confession” the community head ‘gave’ the signal. An eyewitness said he gave a nod to the vigilante men who were dressed in a uniform – white and blue polo shirt. The four boys were then paraded around the community while being beaten. The parade ended at a square where they were displayed to the community. The people of community gathered to watch the beating of the four boys – who the Monarch had given the blessing for the lives to be taken. As the beating continued – some within the community were said to have pleaded on behalf of the boys – asking that their lives be spared. But the pleadings fell on deaf ears. The beating continued till the vigilante men poured petrol on the boys and lit them on fire – with tires hanging on their necks. They burned alive. And as they burned, none of the members of the community moved to save them. The school administration is yet to make a comment on the incident but the head of the ASU Port Harcourt Branch, Dr. Adiele [a lecture at Uniport] told 247ureports.com that he was not aware of the incident and that he is confident that the incident was not at Uniport or involving Uniport students. The student government is yet to speak on the case. Interestingly, the police have made arrests. Thirteen persons have been arrested including the Chief of the Community, stated the Police Public Relations Officer [PPRO]; Ben Ugwuegbunam. “The suspects are being interrogated by crack detectives from SCID department”. The police also pleaded with the Uniport students to reman calm. The students are reportedly on rampage, burning markets houses and attacking the community members some of who watched and filmed the horrendous killing of the students with their phones. |

I'll tell you what though, the fact that they were students also increased the profile of this case. A student life is somehow more important than an uneducated life. The big mans life is sometimes worth hundreds or thousands of average people. I remember watching NTA after a plane crash, before details eg number of dead, possible causes etc had been fully discloses first question that comes to our 9ja journalist, "Where any prominent Nigerians killed?". I would agree that given context, in some situations one person's survival might be more important than another's because of collective greater good, but in 9ja it's blind worship of 'big men'. Several parties should shre the blame in this matter; 1. Where was the police when this boys were arrested. I believe there must be a Police Post in that community or any community close to it. Would they say no information got to them until the boys were killed. Some one said in the initial post that a detachment of Policemen that came were resisted by the crowd. i believe if they had asked for more support and shot into the air and also used tear gas they would have been able to disperse the murderous crowd. Invariably the Police cooperated with the crowd. 2. They reason why things like this happen is the decadence and the degenerate state of our society. The crowd is frustrated them. Anything a criminal is arrested and handed over to the police, within a short time you see such persons walking free in the street. such acts leads to frustrated and distrust in the security agencies. For what reason would the Police corporate with the crowd? if the parents of this boys are high up and well connected they would receive phone calls that the Police should release them immediately. 3. They action of the crown is not justifiable in any way. As such the main perpetrators should be fished out. Government and Civil Society group should embark on literacy campaign t educate people that no matter the extent to which they have lost faith in the society, they should not take laws into their hands. 4. Parents and guardians should advice and teach their wards and also know the types of friends they keep. a lot of students from well to do home get into unwholesome activities in school in the name of "belonging" and so on. You see girls dating older men and getting involving in casual prostitution and they call it runs. They dont see it that they are doing prostitution. some of this girls are even from average of well to do home, some do it out of adventure some out of gree. On the part of the boys they get into "obtaining" and cults just to show they are hard guys, happening guys or strong men. They types of music you hear in our airwaves always talk of making money living big, living on the fast lane and this ha gone a long way in shapping the values of these young ones. In the original post, someone mentioned that the sister to one of the boys said she has repeatedly advised her brother against such acts. 5. Finally, I am saying the boys killed are thieves, even if they are they don't deserve to die that way; they should have been given a second chance. Today you have former armed robbers that have become pastors. |
