We are the architect of our own problems in Nigeria. It all started the day we allowed it in our heads that anything Oyinbo invent is better than ours and should be seen as been more superior. & it's more unfortunate that even our parents who should be showing us the way are the one making things worse. Or what is wrong with a nigerian understanding and speaking his/her native language better than a foreign language if we must even shift our preference? I concur that sometimes the environment and even the type of job we do demands that we speak english language more being our lingua franca but that shouldn't make us see our language as been inferior. The situation is so bad that some parents even discourage their children from speaking their dialect. I've witnessd a situation like that when a friend was around to see a neighbour and was talking to their 2yr old son and the woman said pls don't speak to him in that language. I couldn't believe my ears...It was so disgusting!Haba! Why in a world would any1 consider his/her language not fit enough for his/her children. This is a disaster!

It's even fast becoming a thing of pride and glory among us-youth- that we don't understand or can't even speak our mothers' tongue..ALU! I av frnds (majority are all these ajebo things) that will even be forming 'ajebo'- that they can't speak their language. U'll see them entering pot holes trying to construct 1 simple sentence in the native language. I pity them and their parents.

I am a confirmed nigerian. A pure yoruba boy. I'm not ashamed of saying it that I speak my language better than Oyinbo. I love it when I even meet anybody that can even speak the real thing (like ijebu, egba, ijesha, ekiti, etc.). I can't imagine my wife trying to bring up my children to understand and speak foreign language better than mine. Why would she do that? Or why would any1 do that? U can live outside Nigeria yet owe ur children that responsibility of tellin dem where the belon and who they are.

Mayb u fall into this category, ask ursef this simple question: Who am I? Where do I come from? Our language is a major identity that we have and should not be compromise for anything not even education. I don't expect u all to agree with me on this. Pls let's av ur views.

I'm more interested in my children learning Igbo than English. Though i have no problem with them balancing their understanding of both languages.

...but seriously, its not funny when you see someone who claims not to savvy his or her native language and yet is not sound in another man's language which they claim they know. But i like it when i see someone who'd struck a balance, knows English as well as his or her native language, i mean it thrills me.
I feel sorry for igbos who claim they can speak yoruba alongside english but can't speak igbo fluently rather understands a little of it...i term them 'not well' dt must be subjected for psychiatric evaluation asap! And i begin to feel for them cos they r also suffering from inferiority complex, they don't want to appear local smh.

^ I think its Ishan lingo.

@topic, my sons are fluent in igbo and another indigenous language. They naturally use and speak English @ school so there's a healthy balance.

I think it's very sad when I see someone who doesn't know his/hers native tongue properly. Very sad.

My hubby is French-Spanish, I'm Igbo....

My kids will start with English @ home, French in school.

But on Vacation, learn Spanish and Igbo.

They better start buckling up, because they have a tough journey ahead of them!
