A Staph-Infected Fractured Leg Bone Patient Needs Urgent Help by Alldruns: 6:03pm On Nov 11, 2012
House pls help!

A colleague had industrial accident dis last July dat left him wt extensive wound & segmented tibia bone fracture, i.e. bigger bone of d lower part of d leg got broken wt a portion bone loss. He had since undergone several surgical operations: ex-fix, muscle flap, skin graft, DBR, etc. Though discharged, while expecting d remaining little portion of d wound to heal & dry completely b4 they talk of what 2 do wt d broken bone, he kept going 4 regular dressing.

D issue now is he was told lately dat he'll b re-admitted cos they discovered thru bone culture dat his bone was infected wt organism, clasified as MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus). Dis they say we make him 2 b placed on antibiotics thru IV & dat nothing else wil b done until he completes all d dosage of it, say 6-8 weeks. He got little hint dat MRSA is incurable bt can only b managed. Dis got him so worried now dat he's almost emaciating.

Pls he'l like 2 know:
1. D effects of dis on his bone, either in d short or long run.

2. If there's any medication dat grows adult's bone faster: either oyibo drugs or local herbs. Or leave it for natural growth. He's abt 42yrs.

3. If dis MRSA wil have any consequence on his wife should they need 2 make luv later in future.

4. When d wound is eventually fully healed, d Surgeons are proposing doing bone graft on him & dis they said wil nt totally achieve their aim except d fibula (d leg smaller bone) is reduced. Obviously, dis wil shorten d leg in d final analysis. Is dis a good option 2 ever settled for?

Pls sir/ma, ur prompt & mature adv is highly appreciated.

^^^ why do you people see everybody's plight as an avenue to peddle medications of questionable genuineness.
@alldruns
Sorry about your friend's condition. The kind of pain he must be going through is better imagined than experienced. Why not get second and third opinions from different orthopaedic surgeons? Pay no heed to people here recommending drugs or therapies, most of them are only after their personal monetary gains.

What a waste of time. The best you will get here are replies from medical students who haven't had first hand experience of the issue. Tell your friend to meet other doctors if he wants second and professional opinion. Doctors are just too busy to be loafing here.

Can't answer your questions directly but hopefully the article below helps.

What Is MRSA?

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a bacterium that causes infections in different parts of the body. It's tougher to treat than most strains of staphylococcus aureus -- or staph -- because it's resistant to some commonly used antibiotics.

The symptoms of MRSA depend on where you're infected. Most often, it causes mild infections on the skin, like sores or boils. But it can also cause more serious skin infections or infect surgical wounds, the bloodstream, the lungs, or the urinary tract.

Though most MRSA infections aren't serious, some can be life-threatening. Many public health experts are alarmed by the spread of tough strains of MRSA. Because it's hard to treat, MRSA is sometimes called a "super bug."

What Causes MRSA?

Garden-variety staph are common bacteria that can live in our bodies. Plenty of healthy people carry staph without being infected by it. In fact, 25%-30% of us have staph bacteria in our noses.

But staph can be a problem if it manages to get into the body, often through a cut. Once there, it can cause an infection. Staph is one of the most common causes of skin infections in the U.S. Usually, these are minor and don't need special treatment. Less often, staph can cause serious problems like infected wounds or pneumonia.

Staph can usually be treated with antibiotics. But over the decades, some strains of staph -- like MRSA -- have become resistant to antibiotics that once destroyed it. MRSA was first discovered in 1961. It's now resistant to methicillin, amoxicillin, penicillin, oxacillin, and many other antibiotics.

While some antibiotics still work, MRSA is constantly adapting. Researchers developing new antibiotics are having a tough time keeping up.

Who Gets MRSA?

MRSA is spread by contact. So, you could get MRSA by touching another person who has it on the skin. Or you could get it by touching objects that have the bacteria on them. MRSA is carried by about 1% of the population, although most of them aren't infected.

MRSA infections are common among people who have weak immune systems and are in hospitals, nursing homes, and other heath care centers. Infections can appear around surgical wounds or invasive devices, like catheters or implanted feeding tubes. Rates of infection in hospitals, especially intensive care units, are rising throughout the world. In U.S. hospitals, MRSA causes more than 60% of staph infections.

Tell ur friend MRSA is curable as long as its managed effectively. If it isnt then it could lead to septaecaemia which can be fatal. Its not an STI so his wife need not worry however it can be passed on via contact with an infectef object or person.
Mrsa in itself is generally not harmful to a healthy person. Its one of the bacterias you find in the nostrils and guts. It only becomes harmful when theres a break in the skin ie pimple, graze, cuts or sores (na there yawa fit gas).
Just in general, ur friend shld maintain very high levels of hygiene at all times to help reduce the cycle of infectivity.
He can read up more on the following links. Good luck and Gods perfect healing are my wishea to him.

your friend has a condition known as osteomyelitis
its essentially an infection of the bone,it can be caused by different organisms
but one of the most difficult to treat is MRSA-methicillin resistant staph aureus
this has nothing to do with his sexual function as often peddled by "molue" drug peddlers
he needs to be on IV antibiotics for a minimum of 6 weeks.
there are different antibiotics which i wouldnt go into right now.
tell your friend its not a death sentence....when MRSA kills it does so quick and fast
if your friend is still alive just emaciating then the chances he will pull through is pretty high

all this information i just gave is under the assumption that your friend has only MRSA....and not anything else.

glad to help smiley.

This is what i have to say base on your questions, for question
1.Once staph infection is properly treated, its gone, no effects there after be it short or long term, staph infections are pretty common.
2.you mentioned the patient is 42 yrs old, all his bones are ossified and as such no bone growth medically possible, that's why bone graft is opted for.
3.No effect on the wife, so far he finishes his IV antibiotics and orals, if sent home wit it.
4.BONE graft is a very good option, reducing fibula bone is ideal for proper healing of the graft, and if he doesn't want graft, he wont be able to bear weight on his own even when the wound is healed. So graft is a good option.

MRSA is curable but difficult because first line antibiotics doesn't help. Cheers

1) if nt well treated or managed, it can lead to osteomyelitis(infection of the bone and bone
marrow that can destroy the bone and cause
deformity or result in amputation if not treated)
2) i dont think there is any medication of such, cos the human bone stops growing at the age of approx 24yrs...
3) it is a highly contagious infection dt can be transmitted even by touching. Since it concerns d legs, it has no effect in dat regard(making luv). From the best of my knowledge, MRSA has no effect on d reproductive organs.
4) i think datz d best option.

@OP: i'm so sorry. I survived a car accident about 4 months back but fractured my right femur and left wrist; plus i had sixth nerve palsy in my left eye. I extensively researched my condition online and this encouraged me and made me know before hand what the doctor would likely do. The sixth nerve palsy is gone and i hope to walk and return to work in d coming weeks.

Never underestimate the power of the internet/Google for being ontop of your health care. Good luck!

I wish your friend quickest recovery! And treatment should commence immediately. Since this is an invasive infection, he has to undergo a gruelling antibiotic regime.

Gosh! He must be going under real physical and psychological distress.
