My Newborn's Nerves Torn During Delivery (erb's Palsy) And Hand Fractured by n9jaboy: 8:47pm On Aug 05, 2014
Hello my son is 4 months now with no movement on his right hand as a result of a doctor carelessness/ forcefully pulling the boy during delivery. Also his left hand was fractured. Do we have Doctors in the house that conduct nerve transfer surgery (neuro-surgeon) please advise me the best option for my child. Thank you

Have you been doing physiotherapy on his right hand?

Hello, this is so unfair to you and mostly to the newborn. Why not take him to the hospital, preferably a teaching hospital like LUTH, I prefer physical examination which gives room for appropriate medication.

My two cents though.

Thanks is just that my faith in hospitals keep fading day by day. Last xray report says the fractured hand is horizontally displaced and i noticed the hand is shorter, now they are considering oestoclasis- i shuda wuda taking him to traditional man

That's a disorder of the upper trunk of his Brachial Plexus. I feel so sorry for the young boy. He remains a star I hope he can be attended to. I recommend that he should be brought to LUTH asap pls!
the earlier the better o

Yes it does! If we dont excercise the muscle and it becomes stiff before the nerves regenerate it becomes serious wahala

Physiotherapy is the main stay of treatment. Depending on the extent of nerve damage, most infants recover nerve function within the first year of continuos physiotherapy. Patients might benefit immensely from surgery when physiotherapy fails- but then surgery isn't a guarantee.

Dd you say so resistant ? What does that mean exactly ? Physiotherapy might bring your boy's arm back if done consistently and rightly. Continue doing the physiotherapy - it's the main thing. If by 6-8 months you're not satisfied with the progress of improvement, you can opt for surgery.

Please are you a doctor? Do you conduct EMI Test in your hospital or do you know any hospital that do conduct exploratory surgery. I will appreciate any info on this

What i mean by resistant is -he tries to withdraw/pull back his hand if you take it to an uncomfortable position unlike before that he wont respond

I'm not a doctor. If you're not satisfied with the care given to you at the hospital managing you, you can ask to be referred to a specialist - a pediatric neurosurgeon/neurosurgeon in a teaching hospital close to you. I hope you get all the help you need.

Thanks for contributing. I've been to a teaching hospital.

Wow. That's something. Please continue the physiotherapy. The outcome is considerably okay. Nerves take long to heal- you have to understand that. Don't let desperation lead you to do "things"( I heard you mention traditional man). No one knows limbs and fractures better than the surgeons.

You & ur wife can also exercise the hand in all range of motions around the shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand joints. Your boy is gonna be fine-best believe. Seek specialist advise before taking a step. In cases like this, your desperate desire to do "very good" might turns out otherwise. God forbid. You wouldn't want that. But take it easy.

I feel surgery is number one. It's a nerve palsy or nerve disorder but physiotherapy should help his muscles sha. I strongly recommend that a neurosurgeon shld be seen at Luth or Uch

Nice to have stumbled on this- my cute son was born 5weeks ago with this condition on his right arm. I feel so sorry for him and my wife feels guilty. A specialist comes to our place three times a week for therapy using a stimulator and light. There seem to be some improvement especially from the elbow down, but the shoulder is still very weak. We are considering seeing a surgeon anytime soon because we cannot afford our cute son grow up with a disability.
