The practice of polygamy was to take care of four areas of women's needs, which are:
-Young single women where the gender ratio is polarized.
-Young widows as a result of sudden deaths and wars.
-Matured single women as a result of wars, polarized gender ratio and massive male rejection of heterosexual union.
-Single mothers as a result of rape, promiscuity and divorce.
Truly, we are in a polarized gender ratio world, and the practice of polygamy has only favoured younger women, leaving the rest that also need it completely frustrated. This is not the Bible standard for polygamy! By the Bible standard, a man could marry women that are senior to him in age, in order to save matured women the agony of an unsolicited single life. There is actually no age barrier in solving this problem.
Some widows in ancient Israel waited for male children to grow-up to marry them. Today the focus of all men is on the younger women. Serial monogamists and married men with secret mistresses, who are actually polygamists also do the same. This is absurd and an abuse of the privilege of polygamy. For polygamy to be palatable, it must solve the problem it was meant for, and not to create additional problem of scarcity of young women for the young men or to bring about further humiliation of matured women.
Those who truly believe in polygamy should spread their tentacles to the young and the matured. There should be a woman senior to the man among his wives in a truly polygamous life. Prophet David had young women and also women that were his seniors. Marriage is all about having someone that is kind to you, and whom you can also return the same to. Those who are greedy and self-centred are not fit for marriage. They should remain in the world of free sex if they need sex, instead of messing things up for the helpless women. Marrying only younger women while matured women continue to pile-up is a clear indication of self-centredness. Such men are not looking for women to show kindness to but women to exploit.
