The canon of ‘serious’ rock music – from Scott Walker to the Smiths – is often depressive to the point of suicidal. It’s also why The Weeknd – aka 22-year-old Canadian crooner/producer Abel Tesfaye – has joined the likes of Frank Ocean and Holy Other in acquiring kudos with indie kids.

Trilogy collates three albums released for download in 2011, where Tesfaye’s falsetto sings of heartbreak over icy synths, coma-paced beats and Morricone guitars. House Of Balloons takes Siouxsie’s doomy goth anthem Happy House into strip-club territory, while crafty Cocteau Twins samples will thrill curious emo types. Thirty tracks in one go is both cloying and depressive but there’s plenty of tremendous stuff her.
