We keep making mistakes by not learning from the past!

The number 1 sign of an imminent economic disaster in a country is a currency crisis!

Humans will always be humans, we've seen this before but now that we see this again, we wish it isn't true.

Thank you. I will go for the penny stocks. Strictly long term.

To be brief,i feel totally blown off just to mention but few before i decided to focus on FBNH with proceed from UBA that i sold off out of trauma to see if i can meet up lapses if there is still hope in banking sector.

I'm looking at Mansard Insurance. Looks like the insurance sector in Nigeria is picking up and mansard is ideal for long term. What do you think?

Are companies operating in NASD binded by NSE/SEC rules as per when they're expected to release their financial results. How does one get details of their financial performance, dividend and bonus history.

Hello House,
If a company closes its register today and I sold all of my stocks in the same company today, will i still qualify for dividends or bonus declared by the company if its register closes today. Thanks.

Godisfaithful:
Sir,
Sell today = No dividends/bonus.
Sell tomorrow = You are qualify for dividends/bonus declared.
I hope you understand the simple explanation grin

Intendy:
YES cause you sold @ marked down price
but some registrars na were(mad)
That's why their is qualification date

debeey87:
You and Godisfaithful dey confuse me o. I understand qualification date, but d big question is if I opt out at the close of trade on the qualification date, am I still qualified?

Godisfaithful:

ABSOLUTELY NO SIR grin

Intendy:
You made mention of closure date in your question and not qualification date which are 2 different things.if you sell on qualification date, you are entitled to NOTHING.But on closure you will benefit

@Myjoy, I think you are getting it wrong. @Intendy was previously right. It is a common misconception that investors need to hold a stock through the qualification date in order to qualify for dividend. This is actually not the case. As long as you purchase a stock prior to the ex-dividend date, you can sell the stock any time ON or AFTER the ex-dividend date, and still be eligible for the dividend. In Nigeria, the date of the Closure of Register- reported on the NSE website- is the same as the ex-dividend date. So, @debeey87 would qualify for the dividend if he sold on the ex-dividend date. This is because, on this date, the stock usually trade ex-dividend (without dividend), and new buyers will no not be eligible for the dividend.

In summary, in order to receive the dividend, you must own the stock before the ex-dividend date, and you may only sell on or after this date.

NB: Remember to put the T+3 system of settlement rule (trade date plus three days) into consideration if you really don't want to miss the dividend.

My advice to those with huge losses is to think carefully before taking a decision. If you have money you may average down AT THE RIGHT TIME. I have done this severally and it worked for me. However, if you don't have money you may consider cutting your losses, and moving on to a winning stock. It can be difficult to time the market, but if you can get your fundamentals and technicals right it may not be too difficult to be lucky sometimes. For example, going by @betcindy's post, if I bought 100,000 units of UBA @N44 in 2008, and assuming the time is now right, I would buy 1 million units of UBA @N2.80 and take my cost basis down to around N6.55 from N44+. Then I would relax because if I could hold since 2008, I can hold a little further till UBA gets to my current average purchase price of around N6.55 which may not be too far away. I prefer to do this than to sell at a huge loss. Remember, you are selling because you think it is the right thing to do while someone else is buying from you because he/she feels it is the right time to buy. I am not fan of 'averaging down'. This is just what I would do in some cases, and should not be taken as a recommendation to buy, buy and buy grin.

The problem we have is that some of us don't want to invest time and energy to learn the trades before diving into it. The truth is your losses will continue to outnumber your profits until you get your fundamentals and technicals right. Some of us invest without having any prior knowledge of the stock market. You don't need to be a stock analyst to be able to trade successfully in the market, but you need to know what you are doing. If you must invest without a good foundation your best bet is to go for long term, or invest in mutual fund instead of gambling with your hard earned money. Whether you are in for a short or long term, never invest what you can't afford to loose, and don't let your emotions run your portfolio. I remember what Robert De Niro said in a movie..."don't let yourself get attached to anything you are not willing to walk out on in 30 seconds flat if you feel the heat around the corner." Good luck!

The results being expected in the banking sector are not going to be good, if FCMB is anything to go by. We can safely assume that FCMB is this clear because their Q3 was audited. They're not the only banks with an exposure to the oil sector; if anything, they have one of the least exposures to the oil sector.

When other banks' books are audited, things will come out clearer. The huge dividend expectations may turn out to be a mirage. There may be a consequent stampede at the exit door instead.

I am selling down right now, as against popular opinion and I take responsibility for my actions. I could have kept quiet about this, knowing the sentimental backlash I expect, but let my conscience be cleared that I didn't hold back what may turn out to be useful information.

Peace

but people are actually waiting for 2016 Q2 to see d real effects of various bank loan effect.
