Simple method to verify *#0# should give you a screenful of buttons where you can test a variety of functions such as vibration and different colours on d screen. Works only with stock rom though. And if I'm buying a 2nd hand Samsung it HAS to be on stock rom.

Also try holding down volume up +home key (that's the centre key on Samsung). It should boot into d samsung download mode where it displays the code name for S5. If any or both of the above fail... RUN!
