For once, they are not blaming Fulanis for this Yoruba problem. It is interesting to note that Yorubas have 201 gods shocked No wonder confusion is not very far from my Yoruba people - they don't know which god to serve hence many become atheists or are unable to serve the ONE God with the required dedication. Yoruba Muslims are generally regarded as being unable to practice true Islam while many Christians 'practice' the religion while maintaining a working relationship with juju men in the village.

The book is very interesting and should be a must read.

LAGOS — Eminent Yoruba leaders, Thursday, concurred that the Yoruba race was on the brink of extinction if something is not done quickly to revitalise its cultural values and heritage.

The Yoruba leaders who spoke during the public presentation of two books, City of 201 Gods: Ile Ife In Time, Space and the Imagination’ and In My Father’s Parsonage: The Story of an Anglican Family in Yoruba- speaking Nigeria included Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Osun State, his Ekiti State counterpart, Dr. Kayode Fayemi; Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuade and Olowu of Owu Kingdom, Oba Olusanya Adegboyega Dosunmu.

This also was the position of virtually every other eminent member of the race who either spoke at the podium or chatted exclusively with Vanguard at the launch of the book authored by Harvard University Professor of World Religion, Prof. J. K. Olupona under the chairmanship of Ibadan-based politician, Chief Olanihun Ajayi.

Interestingly, the book launch, planned for just presentation and gathering of financial proceeds, became a gathering of politicians, religious leaders and traditional icons from trado-religious groups.

Clad in brown aso oke with an eleti aja cap to match, the author said the books were products of his endless struggle exploring world religion. He gave a reason why true Yoruba man could not be a religious fundamentalist, saying: “A people who have 201 gods cannot have a problem with one more God.” cheesy

In his brief speech, Governor Kayode Fayemi of EkitiState, observed that Yoruba was so unique in Nigeriaand world history because it was the only multi-religious community where people sit together without hurting or killing themselves.

.
In his speech, Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Osun State, who stole the show for a moment as he was the only speaker ushered to the podium with extract from a tract and talking drums sounds, cool promised to mobilise his colleagues, governors, of the South-West states including Ondo to make the book, City of 201 Gods, a must read in all secondary schools across the region.

The Yoruba race is not doing badly in this regard when compared with other ethnic groups. Though a concerted effort need to be put in place to revitalize our culture and tradition.

Exactly my thoughts. The moment we realize that our cultural heritage is on the brink of extinction the better for us as a people.

For once, they are not blaming Fulanis for this Yoruba problem. They seem to be suggesting that the Yoruba culture is inconsistent with being a true Muslim or Christian. These 2 religions believe in only ONE God. This explains a lot.

totally misleadin topic. Poster do you need to be told that yoruba can never and will never go into extinction? Or perhaps you can't decode that Its the gods that are feared of goin into extinction. Ask for my opinion i say good riddance to bad rubbish. Christianity and Islam are more than enough for us. Let other Nigerians who want to hold to their gods priest and goddesses do so. As for fear of extinction of yoruba race that is next to impossible. Even our cultural heritage are still glowin so you jus sit down and watch the most civilized tribe in the sub Sahara Africa do their thing huh...

Why don't you mind your business? You don't need to use panadol for another man's headache.

Which culture in Nigeria is not affected by foreign influence.
North were not Muslims from origin, they embrace it.
Hat wearing is not peculiar to Ijaws from origin, the adopted it.
Igbos were not Catholics/Christians from scratch, they adopted it.
Yorubas may have 201 gods but their culture and Ifa worshipping was unique until civilisation came through Lagos and Arabian religion through Ilorin. Which is just what other tribes also experience.

Yorubas have custodian of their culture and various ways of preserving it. Ask the 'Agbekoyas', ask the 'OPCs', ask the 'Elewe Omos'.
