Pope Benedict XVI the number one head of the roman catholic church has condemned gay marriage describing it as “unnatural” and a “threat to peace”

The Pope said this on gay marriage during his World Day of Peace 2013 annual address: It’s “unnatural” and any support of same sex unions upsets the natural laws of faith and justice. Obviously, the LGBT community begs to differ with Benedict XVI. Even now, states that have accepted gay and lesbian marriages as legal may have a thing or two to say.

On Saturday, Pope Benedict XVI launched the official celebration of the Catholic Christmas season by the lighting of the tree in Vatican City, according to a Dec. 16 Huffington Post report.

The Holy See released a statement from the Pontiff who maintains his stance on gays and lesbians marrying of the same gender.

The Pope on gay marriage:

“There is…a need to acknowledge and promote the natural structure of marriage as the union of a man and a woman in the face of attempts to make it juridically equivalent to radically different types of union.

“Such attempts actually harm and help to destabilize marriage, obscuring its specific nature and its indispensable role in society. These principles are not truths of faith, nor are they simply a corollary of the right to religious freedom. They are inscribed in human nature itself, accessible to reason and thus common to all humanity.”

While the culture of this long-standing controversial issue is moving towards tolerance, the Catholic leader believes same-sex marriage does more harm than good.

Even as American states, President Obama, activists, some politicians and religious leaders have evolved in their opinions about gay marriage, Pope Benedict XVI has not budged in his position.

However, bear in mind that the Pope’s stance on gay marriage has largely been the same. Recall that in the past, he has been quoted as saying same-sex unions are “insidious and dangerous” and a “threat to humanity.”

While the standoff continues, those who oppose his position must look on the inside and do what is best for them based on their current beliefs.

How can the Pope condemn an act that a large minority of his clergy engage in.

With all the cover-ups, relocations and downright disgrace , who is he to condemn others. Let him sort out the h.omosexuality in the catholic 'church' first, then he will see clearly to help others.

But he has been involved in cover-ups to protect his bishops and priests in the past.

For example , instead of removing them from office, he relocates them to another parish with anonymity ,which means these gay priests become repeat offenders.

Estimating the number of homosexual priests

Main article: Homosexuality in the Roman Catholic priesthood
Evidence from several studies has shown that there are higher than average numbers of homosexual men (active and non-active) within the Catholic priesthood and higher orders; estimates presented in Donald B. Cozzens' book The Changing Face of the Priesthood range from 23–58%.[12]

A 2002 nationwide poll in America by the Los Angeles Times of 1,854 Roman Catholic priests reported that 80% of referred to themselves as "mostly" heterosexual, with 67% being exclusively heterosexual, 8% leaning toward heterosexual, 5% completely in the middle, and 6% leaning toward homosexual and 9% saying they are homosexual, for a combined figure of 15% on the homosexual side. Among younger priests (those ordained for 20 years or less) the figure was 23%.

The same survey reported that 44% of the priests said "definitely" a "homosexual subculture", defined as a "definite group of persons that has its own friendships, social gatherings and vocabulary", exists in their diocese or religious order. A 2001 survey conducted by Dean Hoge for Catholic University of America found that 19% of priests said "clearly there is a subculture", 36% said there probably is and 17% said there is not.[13]

A number of anonymous studies have also suggested a prevalence of homosexual leanings in the Roman Catholic priesthood. Studies by Wolf and Sipe from the early 1990s suggest that the percentage of priests in the Catholic Church who admitted to being gay or were in homosexual relationships was well above the national average for the United States of America.[14] Elizabeth Stuart, a former convener of the Catholic Caucus of the Lesbian and Gay Christian movement claimed, "It has been estimated that at least 33 percent of all priests in the RC Church in the United States are homosexual."[15]

Anecdotal press reports from anonymous sources also suggest that the incidence of homosexuality in the Roman Catholic priesthood is much higher than in the general population.[16][17] It is[vague] theorized part of the over-representation might be caused by heterosexual priests leaving in order to marry. But it may also have much to do with the Church offering a perceived 'sanctuary' for many men living in societies where homosexuality is criminalised or shunned, especially reducing the pressure by families to marry and have children.[citation needed]

One report suggested that since the mid-1980s Roman Catholic priests in the United States were dying from AIDS-related illnesses at a rate four times higher than that of the general population; with most of the cases contracted through same-sex relations, and the cause often concealed on their death certificates.[18] Bishop Thomas Gumbleton of the Archdiocese of Detroit suggested, "Gay priests and heterosexual priests didn't know how to handle their sexuality, their sexual drive. And so they would handle it in ways that were not healthy." Furthermore the report suggested that some priests and behavioral experts believe the church had "scared priests into silence by treating homosexual acts as an abomination and the breaking of celibacy vows as shameful".

Truth doesnt change. The same truths we proclaimed 2000 years ago...which we still proclaim now...are the same truths we will proclaim forever.

It's why the Martyrs shed their blood... Its why we face "plenty criticism."

The comments here on this thread here are foolish apart from Jesoul's and Frosbel's.

Marriage existed before the catholic church, judaism and christianity. What real right does the Pope have to say about marriage?

His church that has been rocked with homosexual scandals of man and boy? Hypocrite.

Even so, how does gay marriage threaten peace? Rather the catholic church is a threat to peace itself.

Marriage is the preserve of culture, hence such relationships are dictated by the cultural values. In our modern, multipluralistic society, hatred and xenophobia shouldn't have a place. Racists, homophobes are blinded by ideologies.

YES! Our comments are stupid and foolish and your comment and that of your atheist friends are full of wisdom and insight, but I have a simple question for you that will require simply Yes or No as an answer. If your parents were GAY, and they both went for GAY MARRIAGE, would you have come into existence to diffentiate between foolish and wise comments on Nairaland. Just answer YES or NO.
