[b]Messi has equalled Zinedine Zidane's total of four victories in the prestigious contest held by the Uruguayan newspaper 'El País'. FC Barcelona's Argentine forward Lionel Messi was voted 'King of European Football' for the fourth year running in the annual contest held by the Uruguayan daily 'El País', which published the results of the European sports critics vote on Sunday. Messi, Barcelona's outstanding striker, received 108 votes giving him a clear margin over his team-mate Andrés Iniesta, who came in second with 93 votes. What was most surprising was the placing of Real Madrid's Portuguese striker Cristiano Ronaldo, who could only manage third in this year's edition with only nine votes. Lionel Messi has already won the prestigious contest in previous years, which is very highly considered in South America, namely in 2009, 2010 and 2011. By winning it again this year, he equals the record held by the Frenchman Zinedine Zidane, who was voted best player in Europe in 1998, 2001, 2002 and 2003. The winner of best coach went to the manager of the Spanish national squad Vicente del Bosque, who beat the Portuguese coach José Mourinho by nine points, with another Spaniard, Josep Guardiola, coming in in third place. Around 250 journalists from a variety of European newspapers, magazines and press agencies participated in the vote, the results of which have been published in the sports section of Uruguayan daily 'El Pais' for the last 27 years.
