In a primary school, 70% of the boys and 55% of the girls can ride a bicycle. If a boy and a girl are chosen at random, what is the probability that:

(a) both of them can ride a bicycle [Is it 70/100 * 55/100 or 70/200 * 55/199 or neither?]

(b) neither of them can ride a bicycle [Is it 30/100 * 45/100 or 1 - p(both can ride a bicycle)?]

(c) if 150 boys are selected randomly in the school, what is the probability that they can ride a bicycle? [I did 70/100 * 150 = 105. p(both can ride = 105/150 = 7/10). Is it correct?
.

a.)it has to be 0.7 * 0.55..i.e p(the boy can ride AND the girl can also ride.

b.)it has to be 0.3*0.45 cos you cant just say 1-p(both can ride) considering a possibility of either of them and not both of them will be able to ride...i.e
0.7*0.55(both can ride) + 0.7*0.45(only boy can ride) + 0.3*0.55(only girl can ride) + 0.3*0.45(none can ride) = 1

c.) this one ehn....i'll just do (0.7)^150.

Ciaoo!!!

Thanks so much for helping out. Now I remember that neither is always followed by nor which means this is not an OR/NOR question but a not A AND not B question.

Try as much as possible to interprete each statement in mathematics. If you are able to successfuly do that... every other thing becomes easier.

A quarter plot of land is bought along with 10x60ft in Lagos at the rate of N 1m. How much does the full plot cost.

If the buyer is given another option of 30x70ft at the same cost of N1m. Which of the two options does the buyer go for?

Hint: Assume full plot measures 60x120ft.
Re: Nairaland Mathematics Clinic by chezholy(m): 11:32am On Sep 27, 2015
A full plot cost N3,000,000.
I'll go with the first option cos it has an area of 2,400 sq. ft. the second has an area of 2,100 sq. ft.

A man plans to save N3,000 every week for 15 years with an annual interest rate of 6%. If he stops the saving after 8 years, How much does he receive at the end of the tenor (15 years) if the interest rate increases to 8% after the first 8 years.

Seamione:
Good evening guys,
Please take a look at this question.

Three digit numbers re formed from the digits 1,2,4,5,6. If repetition is not allowed and a number is picked at random, find the probability that it's a multiple of 5 or an odd number.

From my calculations, I got 2/5 but the text says it's 3/5. Who is wrong?
..total number of sample spaces 5p3....or....make 3 boxes..to form 3 numbers, let any of the 5 numbers go into the first box, after then, let another number go into the next one which will be 4 then the last one which is 3....so,5*4*3=60...............for numbers which end with 5..make 3 boxes..for a number to end with 5,it means the last digit is 0 or 5,we only av 5 in the question, thenm the last box will take the 1...which means only one number can fit into the box which is 5,then the first number will take 4 and the second 3...=4*3*1=12....for odd numbers....the last number must be odd,the 2 odd numbers in the questions are 1 and 5,then the last box will take 2 and the first box will take 4 and the second one 3,therefore 4*3*2=24.....probability that it's a multiple of 5 or an odd number=12+24=36......therefore.p=36/60=3/5.......

Re: Nairaland Mathematics Clinic by Ayomide002: 9:59pm On Sep 30, 2015
jackpot:
that question is the same as ''probability that it is an odd number.'' probability= event occurence/sample space.

We have three boxes to be filled with the figures 1,2,4,5,6 without replacement. The last box only has 2 choices 1 and 5.
So, if the last box is 1, then we feed the other two boxes with 4 figures. No of ways this can be done is 4P2=12
Occurence= 4P2*2=24.
Sample space is 5P3=60

probability = 24/60=2/5.

Hmmmmmmmm. Someone should correct me, please.
.solved.

Someone should kindly help with this. Use the method of pivotal condensation to find the values of x1, x2 and x3 from the following system of equations. 1.7x1+2.3x2-1.5x3=2.35
1.1x1 +1.6x2-1.0x3=-0.94.
2.7x1 -2.2x2+1.5x3=2.70....where x1, x2 and x3 is x subscipt 1, 2 n 3 respectively. (A) calculate the residual errors.

Rewrite the equation, you can use x, y, and z in place of the x with subscripts.
Or just write it in a paper, take the picture and upload it.
I'll see what I can do.

I guess the equation would be written as:
1.7x +2.3y -1.5z =2.35

1.1x +1.6y -1.0z =-0.94

2.7x -2.2y +1.5z =2.70
