Following the sale of my Audi S8 on the 07th January 2013, https://www.nairaland.com/748626/project-d2-s8-audi-s8/1#13837228 I was on the look out for a replacement. So on the 02th January, I found just the right car. I took the train to Poole, Dorset to pick her up. Having only seen the trader's pictures in the original advert, I was bracing myself for a "not-as-described" car, but I was pleasantly surprised.

I ended up with this:















I opted for a wagon rather than the sedan. More practical, and I've always had a thing about wagons. The B6 Audi A4 Avant is a pretty car, looks nicer than the sedan. And better still, she's manual!

With a 1,8L DOHC 20V Turbo, she's brisk, nowhere near as quick as my outgoing Audi S8, but not a big deal. I'm no stranger to V8 transplants, and this will be getting the "treatment." Although she's manual, she's a 5-speed. I have a spare 6-speed manual, which was destined for my old Audi S8. That will find a new home in my A4 Avant Quattro.

Body and wheels? Watch this space, for parts as they arrive!

I can understand. But since its Turbo, i thought that should have been taken care of, to some extent?

Yes, it's turbo, and makes 190 hp stock. A remap will make 230 hp, and much more with supporting mods. The US boys are running the 1,8T with up to 600 hp at the crank.

But it's not the same! Part of the attraction of a V6 / V8 is the sound.

The V6/V8 songs, I would call it. So sweet to listen to when they rev above 3k rpm. And they rev smoothly to red zone, unlike some I4s that would start to sound harsh when they rev above 4k rpm.

For the first time since buying my B6 A4 Avant Quattro, I took her on an extended road trip. Between Thursday and Friday, I've covered 524 miles (842 kms). While she performed faultlessly with myself and family on board, one thing becdame apparent - a droning rear differential.

It's obviously worse under load. Now I can purchase a replacement from eBay, but there lies the problem. My car is a 5-speed manual. I'm fitting a 6-speed manual in its place. The final drive ratio of the 5-speed is 3.89:1 while the 6-speed has a final drive ratio of 4.11:1. Obviously, both front and rear differential must match.

I a spare 6-speed manual, which means it'll make little sense to buy a replacement 3.89:1 rear differential. Sure, it'll be perfect for my current set-up, but it means when I come to fit the 6-speed manual, I'll have to purchase another rear differential to match - a 4.11:1. Ideally, I could buy the 4.11:1 diff, and just do the 6-speed manual conversion now. I need a propshaft and front driveshafts though, to complete the kit.

Points to ponder.

Correct. I'm replacing it with a 4,2 V8 2 x DOHC 40V from a 2004 Audi S4. smiley

The 1,8T had a custom remap a few hours ago, and now has about 40 hp more, so we're talking 230 hp. Still, it's a moot point. If it made 400 hp, and the V8 made 350 stock, I'd still prefer the V8.

Your Volkswagen Golf III is a 1,8 CL 75 hp, with SPI (Single Point Injection).

GTI were only available with the following engines:

2,0 (1,984cc) I4 SOHC 8V (115 hp).
2,0 (1,984cc) I4 DOHC 16V (150 hp).

VR6 were only available with the following engines:

2,8 (2,792cc) V6 SOHC 12V (174 hp).
2,9 (2,861cc) V6 SOHC 12V (190 hp)*.

* Syncro AWD only.

Hello Siena, sorry to hijack again.. Regarding the question I asked the last time about swapping out a 1.4 engine for an Audi A2 1.4 16v 75ps (not sourced one yet), will it be OK fitting a 100ps engine in A2? Will it pass emissions test? Not sure if there are compatibility issues especially with engine codes

I'm still dragging my feet on replacing/fixing the engine as the problem only becomes an issue when idling for more than 5 minutes or thereabout. When stuck in traffic, I tend to give it some throttle ever so often to prevent it from idling too long. I hear this is an issue with the 1.4 engines.

Your advice is appreciated. Thanks again.

No problems fitting the 1,6 16V motor in the Audi A2 engine bay, and no adverse effect on missions.

I do believe the TRD package for the FJ cruiser lumps in a Turbocharger as well. Don't quote me though.

Now, what's the current progress on this A4 Avant?

Still gathering parts for the V8 engine installation.

This will be completely B7 RS4 spec, so all panels bar the roof are being replaced. It's not a bodykit, these are replacement panels - so all doors, front fenders, rear quarter panels, hood, tailgate, skirts and bumpers.

A change of plans (and the need for a full-size luxury Sedan) means my A4 Avant Quattro is on its way out. My requirements for a luxury cruiser means my replacement must have:

001) AWD.
002) Climate Control.
003) Sat Nav.
004) Television.
005) Adaptive Cruise Control.
006) Twin-pane Glass.
007) 20" Alloy Wheels.
008) Bi-Xenon Headlamps.
009) Air Suspension.
010) Bang & Olufsen Audio.
011) CD Player & Radio.
012) Electric Seats With Heater.
013) Electric Rear Blinds Inc. The Rear Doors.
014) Mini Fridge.
015) Electric Windows All Round.
016) Electric And Heated Mirrors.
017) Auto-Dim Mirrors.
018) Rain-Sensing Wipers.
019) Automatic Headlamps (Dusk-Sensing).
020) V8 Engine! (Naturally).

And all the bells and whistles that make driving across the Continent a pleasure.

What could this be?

Not a chance! I don't really like British cars, the build quality of the Range Rover is not as good as some hand crafted offerings, considering it's mass-produced, poor build quality is unacceptable.

A 2011 Kia Sorrento is actually better built.
