lol, chey! people can't write in this thread without getting instant ban. But dw, Odumchi said he'll discuss the matter with Seun. Thanks for the translation! What is computer in Edo? Does the words function similar to Yoruba? Like some machines starts with okò or èro, like èro ìsírò is computer (lit. math/calculation machine). Is it similar in Edo? |

Ok, I see. What about for example airport? |
Re: What Are These Words In Bini Language by ezotik: 11:34pm On Jan 25, 2013 |
airpoti but i could coin a word though, ekena-natin (location where u fly). btw, ship - oko (pronounced oh-kor) |
Re: What Are These Words In Bini Language by StarFlux: 11:40pm On Jan 25, 2013 |
Great! I looked in this dictionary (http://www.edofolks.com/words/enga.htm), and it says airplane is "okeho". So could you also say something like eke okeho or would ekena-natin be better? |
Re: What Are These Words In Bini Language by ezotik: 11:51pm On Jan 25, 2013 |
okay...now i see. okeho makes sense for airplane cos it literally means air-ship so, eke okeho sounds better than ekena-natin.. the "na-na" sounded a bit odd. |

Many of Ezotik's Bini words are not so called. Death, sunglasses, elder and star, for example, are not not correct. |
Re: What Are These Words In Bini Language by ezotik: 10:36am On Jan 26, 2013 |
bokohalal: Some corrections. death/die - uwu/wu. (its actually same thing and i dont think anybody would have misunderstood it. but i will give u that since u are technically more correct) Sunglasses or eyeglasses-ughede (sorry, ive never heard it called ughede. i dont know even know what that means. sunshades/eyeglasses is ughegbe and i guess ughegbe was designated for it because of the mirror-effect of sunshades/eyeglasses) Star-orhomwen (the edo website posted here also seem to think star is owen. and personally, i dont know what is orhomwen) |

Elder is 'Enowaren' |
Re: What Are These Words In Bini Language by ezotik: 12:27pm On Jan 26, 2013 |
bokohalal: Elder is 'Enowaren' enowaren is for anyone that is old. but male and female designates in bini was what i was going for in that post. 1 Like |
Re: What Are These Words In Bini Language by bokohalal(m): 1:37pm On Jan 26, 2013 |
ezotik:It remains 'enowaren, eniwaren'. It is not a gender thing. |
Re: What Are These Words In Bini Language by ezotik: 1:50pm On Jan 26, 2013 |
bokohalal: yes, it is. when u meet an elderly man, the greeting is epa domo for an elderly woman, the greeting is iye koyor/ or koye u never say enowaren domo/or enowaren koyor. the greeting is gender based coz enowaren applies to both sexes 1 Like |

and oh, bokohalal. i now know the meaning of 'isale' in bini. not saying it is same with yoruba 'isale' tho. isale - im combing hair - eto comb - oyiya the act of combing - sale (pronounced sah-ley) isale - im combing. sentence with it in bini: isale eto mwen - im combing my hair capish? |
Re: What Are These Words In Bini Language by ezotik: 1:56pm On Jan 26, 2013 |
btw, capish? - uhon? |
Re: What Are These Words In Bini Language by ezotik: 2:17pm On Jan 27, 2013 |
@starflux, i thought about this airport thingy again while looking at 'okeho' and if we try to translate airport in its literal meaning to edo, it would be ‘ekeho’ with an accented ‘o’ since there is a subtle stress on the ‘o’ while pronouncing. i think that would sound better than ‘eke okeho’. plus, it is short and easy to pronounce. so my suggestion for now is: airplane – okeho airport - ekeho anyone can improve on it. |

Wow...so many similarities between Bini and Yoruba words... |
Re: What Are These Words In Bini Language by macof(m): 12:53am On Dec 01, 2013 |
ezotik: starflux, i honestly dont know. but what i noticed is that the older books by old writers have tonal marks. i guess the recent writers are not too sure of where to place the tones correctly as placing a tone incorrectly can give a word a new meaning. i for example is also not to sure, so most times, i just spell the way i pronounce. i will try and add more words as they come to mind to thread especially words i feel are going obsolete. but without tones tho isn't standard Yoruba and bini of the same tonal vocals? |
Re: What Are These Words In Bini Language by StarFlux: 5:33am On Dec 01, 2013 |
macof:Yes, but Yoruba has a standard version, Edo does not (as far as I'm aware), and tonal qualities can vary between dialects. I guess there are no tones to avoid confusion. It's a shame though, because if I want to test my language skills, I'd end up looking like a fool trying to pronunce these words when there's no tonal indications (from a learner's perspective). In Yoruba, I've learned the tones by heart (how to write them), I'm unsure if I could actually write the tonal markings with only listening to the pronuncation, but I assume it's possible. |
Re: What Are These Words In Bini Language by Nobody: 3:55pm On Dec 01, 2013 |
^ There is a standard form to it. But most people who post online are not pros, so they write without the tones. That was the point of the post. Oguezor - Lawyer Ikuawe - Laptop (also Lap) Kuetin - Chillax Hewe - Rest |

Hello! Wow so great to find edo words. My husband is edo and I'm trying to learn it but it's hard because he only speaks a little and there is not much info online. If you can keep new words coming would be great!! Also, what is the word for butterfly and rainbow in edo?? Can you think of any names or words in edo that sound like english names? I love the name Nora but apparently it means the one who steals so that doesn't really make a good name!! Does Eden mean anything in edo? Thanks!! |
Re: What Are These Words In Bini Language by ChiefX: 1:54pm On Feb 05, 2015 |
nadyao: My cousin's name is Nora (English) and your edo translation made me laugh... As for Eden, not sure but maybe Edenabohien (the day of judgement) could be abbreviated as Eden I am in the process of picking baby names as well |
