PMP Training and Certification in Nigeria is a major step into setting projects right and finding success in career for the average Nigerian professional. Here's a brief write-up on the importance of PMP certification and Training in Nigeria.

What is shocking in the Nigerian context is that many projects are embarked on with nothing more than enthusiastic prayer and it is assumed that the project will somehow work out in the end.

This naïve approach to project execution is why we see the failure of so many Nigerian projects uncompleted or of poor standard. According to the Presidential Projects Assesments Committee PPAC, there are roughly 11,886 on-going capital projects being executed by the Federal Government with an estimated total cost implication of N7.78 trillion.

This figure is undoubtedly shocking. But we must admit that we’ve all experienced a bad project whether it may be a shabbily executed wedding, the intermittent light supply from PHCN or buildings that remain uncompleted for years.

A project is usually considered a failure when it has not delivered what it was required to in line with expectations. For example “the Nigerian project” itself may be considered a failure because it has not met the high expectations of its citizens. So what is a Project Mangement Professional and how can they contribute to create successful projects in Nigeria?

A Project Management Professional or PMP, is a proffessional who has been awarded a certification earned after meeting a minimum standard set by the Project Management Institute (PMI). To qualify to take the examination leading to an award of PMP certification, one must take project management training for no less than 4,500 field hours experience and a minimum of 35 contact hours or project management education from a registered Project Management Trainer. Anyone with a first degree in any discipline and a minimum of 3 years professional working experience in any field is eligible to take the training and subsequent examination. Alternatively a secondary school holder with 7,500 hours contact experience on the field may also qualify.
Armed with a PMP, you possess certified proof that you are competent enough to initiate and complete any project of any scale and in Nigeria there are many projects that are begging for the right professionals to come and manage. One of the problems governments and organizations in Nigeria have is with effective management of projects.

A project can be defined as a collection of tasks that all together make up a specific goal. Many abandoned projects in Nigeria give credence to the fact that we lack competent hands to manage and complete projects in this country implying that those who fit based on their competence are in a better position to be handed projects to manage.

The Project Assessment Committee confirms that "there is indeed evidence of large scale, widespread institutional mediocrity, deficiency of vision and a lack of direction in project management, which result in poor conceptualization, poor design and faulty execution." This has resulted in unquantifiable loses going into billions of Naira to the government and Nigeria as a whole.

People who have a PMP belong to a much needed class of professionals who are deemed competent in starting, managing and completing projects of any scale. It is a globally recognized certification meaning that anyone who has this is certified to handle any project in the world.
