FIFA Approves Goal-line Technology For 2014 World Cup by White007(m): 1:29pm On Feb 19, 2013
FIFA has approved the use of goal-line technology for the 2014 World Cup finals in Brazil.
The governing body said the system will also be introduced for the Confederations Cup this summer, also held in Brazil, following a successful trial at the Club World Cup in December.

FIFA has now put the contract for World Cup goal-line technology out to tender, marking a key moment in the application of modern technology to a sport first codified in 1848.

Two systems, Hawkeye and GoalRef, have so far been licensed by FIFA and both were used at the Club World Cup in Japan, where goal-line technology was employed for the first time.

A statement read: "After a successful implementation of Goal-Line Technology (GLT) at the FIFA Club World Cup in Japan in December 2012, FIFA has decided to use GLT at the FIFA Confederations Cup Brazil 2013 and 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil.

"The aim is to use GLT in order to support the match officials and to install a system in all stadia, pending the successful installation, and pre-match referee tests.

"With different technologies on the market, FIFA has launched a tender today, setting out the technical requirements for the two forthcoming competitions in Brazil.

"The two GLT providers already licensed under FIFA’s Quality Programme for GLT, and other GLT providers currently in the licensing process (that must have passed all relevant tests as of today) are invited to submit tenders.

"Interested GLT companies will be invited to join an inspection visit to the Confederations Cup venues, currently scheduled for mid-March, with a final decision due to be confirmed in early April."

FIFA changed its view on technology after the 2010 World Cup, when a shot from England's Frank Lampard clearly crossed the line but was not given in a second-round match Germany went on to win.

Having previously opposed any changes, FIFA president Sepp Blatter said the matter would be investigated urgently.

Michelle Platini can't wait to become the FIFA president and make away with this goal line technology forever.

Yay! Finally, there will be zero controversy as regards to whether the ball crossed the line or not. Kudos to FIFA for this brave decision.
In addition, FIFA should introduce the Additional Assistant Refereeing system for next year's world cup. That system, as used by UEFA, has been successful 99% of the time so far.

Ope! no more Germany vs England controversy. Even more technology for offside, so that Musa's kind of 5th goal won't be disapproved for the sake of too much whitewashing. Also for simulated penalty offence.

I hope this is not the "downward trend" of footie...?they will make law and change it when it's not in their favour...

I would hve prefared d old way (the traditional line that 's marked @ the goal post) ... It seems to be interesting when u see a defender making the safe by kicking outd ball before it enters d goal post or the keeper saving the ball on d line . Just my opinion

This is fantastic news. As soon as this is done, ϑ door for technology in football is open. Now ϑ next step is replay technology for offsides and controversial officiating.

Who cares whether they like it or not. Without America, soccer, eh excuse me, football has done extremely well. Who cares about 300 million people when 5billion people like the sport.
FIFA is still the richest sports organization so they don't need the US for nada.

Nah!!! sorry to disappoint you, NFL, National Footbal League(handball that they call football) is worth more, despite it's only played in America. The average NFL franchise is valued at $960 million, there are 32 of them. That's about 30.7 Billion dollars to be conservative. FIFA's only worth $1.096 billion, some of the NFL franchise is worth more. MLB, NBA are all worth more than FIFA. Are you still surprised why soccer is still not as popular as the other sports?

Yeah, football (soccer) isn't as popular in the US as of now; but all that will soon change in the next 15-20 years. This is because more American youths and kids are playing actively than ever before.

Goal-line technology wouldn't in itself, make Americans to love football more. Instant replays, a challenge system (where a team can call for a review of the referee's decision)and the introduction of time-outs may do the trick. But these proposals would definitely not be well received by Africans, Europeans and other football-crazy continents, who prefer the status quo.

The League board can decide to introduce the technology, but I doubt if they have the funds required.
