Arsenal could become the most valuable football club in the world if a takeover bid for the north London giants is mounted.
Speculation has continued to grow that a bid for the Gunners is imminent, with the most likely suitors coming from the Middle East, who are reported to have tabled a bid worth £1.5 billion.
But senior City figures think the club – controlled by majority shareholders, Stan Kroenke and Alisher Usmanov – could be worth up to £2 billion in the event that a sale materialises. “Although it’s highly unlikely Kroenke and Usmanov would be willing to sell, you have to say that the profitability and assets that underpin Arsenal would mean the club would be worth more than £1.5 billion,” said Michael Hewitt, who advises blue chip companies about mergers and acquisitions.
“I would say Arsenal’s current value is closer to £2 billion, and that’s allowing for the fact the club hasn’t won anything in recent seasons.”
With more than £120 million of cash in its bank account, profitability remaining high and incredibly low debts, it’s likely the Gunners will have a host of potential suitors if Kroenke and Usmanov ever decided to bail out.
“By any standards, they are an amazing club,” added Hewitt. “If they were to sell, it would blow the likes of Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United out of the water.
“It would be the biggest deal in football history, of that I am sure.”
