this is funny, but they are two different cars! Both are good cars, how could you ask which is better? The 5 series is a bigger car than the 3 series. one is more practical than the other, talking about space. The 5er is a cruiser, more of a highway luxury car. The 3er is sportier, there are various lines on both cars...there's the 540i which is the biggest engine in the 5 series (not talking about the M5), the 328i is the highest of the 3er when the M3 is not taken into account. So the 5er is definitely faster. They are both great cars, it just depends on what you want.
Maybe it will be easier fixing up the 3er than the 5. I dont know though.

theres no fair bases for comparing a small and bigger ride here, it depends on what u want. if u are young and want to spend less and move mostly withing city limits.... go for the 3 series.

i like the e34 535i, my mechanic uses the car but he says its a gas guzzler, i saw one in pristine shape and it looked really amazing.

i am not suprised, thats why i can never go for a car with engine above 2.5 liters, except its a very new one of atleast less than 3 years old.
