It’s plain and simple: Acne is as inevitable as it is annoying. There are a plethora of acne treatments that range from various creams and face washes to pricey prescribed pills. All of these intricate and expensive acne treatments can become burdensome. Instead of breaking the bank and investing a great deal of time into getting rid of acne, try these at-home acne treatments when you experience a flare-up. They’re cheap, simple and effective.

1. Traditional toothpaste , not a gel, is an old standby. It dries the skin and draws out impurities. Dab a bit of toothpaste on the affected area with a q-tip before you go to bed. Make sure to keep it confined to the treatment area because the toothpaste can irritate surrounding skin. Let it dry overnightand wash it off when you wake up in the morning.

2. Fresh garlic may seem like an odd remedy, but rubbing it on the affected area has antibacterial properties. Albeit an unpleasant odor, garlic helps to dry out acne.If you’re a garlic fan and don’t mind the smell, rub some on your flare-ups before heading to bed.

3. Cucumbers can reduce acne as well as feelrefreshing on your skin. And unlike garlic, they provide a pleasant scent that may be more endurable. Grate some cucumbers up and apply to the face for 20 to 30 minutes. If you have the time, add a tablespoon of honey and yogurt to the cucumber to form apaste; honey helps reduce the inflammation of acne scars .

4. Egg whites , applied evenly to the face for 15 to 20 minutes, can help treat affected areas. Crack an egg, scoop out the yolk, and apply. This treatment is said to work best when served with a side of bacon and some toast.

5. Cooked oatmeal is a staple in many commercial facial scrubs and products. Try applying it directly to the skin for 15 minutes before rinsing.

6. Ice can significantly reduce inflammation. Head to the freezer and ice down acne for a few minutes before going to bed, you’ll see the swelling reduced by morning.
