US Deploys Nuclear-Capable B2 Stealth Bombers Over South Korea by dunmorris(m): 9:12am On Mar 28, 2013 |
The US military has deployed two nuclear-capable B2 stealth bombers over South Korea to conduct “deterrence” mission amid escalating tension in the Korean peninsula over North Korea’s threats of attacking its neighbor and the US. The two jets flew out of Whiteman Air Force base in Missouri and dropped dummy ordnance on targets in South Korea on Thursday and completed the 13000-mile round trip in a "single continuous mission," according to a press release by the US military. "The B-2 bomber is an important element of America's enduring and robust extended deterrence capability in the Asia-Pacific region," the US statement said. The deployment of the bombers will further inflame tensions in the region especially after infuriated North Korea threatened frequently over the past days to attack the US mainland, Hawaii and Guam as well as US military bases in South Korea and Japan. According to a Tuesday report by the Korean Central News Agency, Pyongyang has put its military on combat-ready status for possible strikes against the US. The latest threat came a day after the US and South Korea signed a military pact allowing the allies to respond even to low-level provocations from North Korea. “This allows both nations to jointly respond to the North's local provocations, with the South taking the lead and the US in support,” South Korea’s Defense Ministry spokesman, Kim Min-seok, said on Monday. The annual joint military maneuvers by the US and South Korea, which wrapped up on March 21, added fuel to fire in the region where UN Security Council’s sanctions on the North over its third and latest nuclear test in February had already angered Pyongyang. Following the sanctions, unanimously approved at the 15-member council, North Korea on March 8 scrapped its decades-old peace treaty with the southern neighbor and hours later threatened to launch a nuclear strike on the US. Sending B-52s is easy over the peninsula. They’re stationed nearby at Guam. And the North Koreans couldn’t help but see them — they are giant, pre-stealth-era planes that any semi-competent radar operator would have to be blind to miss. But this time, the U.S. sent B-2 bombers: Stealths. They reportedly flew in all the way from their primary base at Whitman Air Force Base in Missouri, passed over South Korea and dropped dummy munitions on a South Korean island as part of the ongoing U.S.-South Korean military exercises. Then they turned around and flew back to North America. And the odds are, the North Koreans never knew the planes had even left Missouri until they read about it all on CNN. The North Korean military is generally outdated. It compensates for that through sheer weight of numbers — thousands of guns and tanks, more than a million men. It would be a formidable opponent in battle that the West can’t afford to underestimate. But for the North, there is going to be something deeply psychologically unsettling about the knowledge that the enemy may be right over your head, at that very moment, and you’re never going to know it until the bombs start falling. There is nothing in the North Korean arsenal that can inflict that kind of psychological strain upon their enemies. They can make the same threats louder than normal, sure. But can they send invisible bombers flying over Washington, D.C., satisfied that the Americans will never know they were there? Hardly. And worst of all, North Korea’s precious nuclear weapons are vulnerable to a sneak attack by the U.S. in this manner. The flight of the stealths is also a strong message of support for the South Koreans. America already has 28,000 troops in the South, and plenty of air and naval assets available in the Pacific. But there is something to be said for the knowledge that the Americans can reach out right from the centre of their continent and lend their allies a hand. It clearly sends a message that the United States is willing to stand with its allies, and with more than just two fancy planes. |

This will further enrage the North. Looks like US wants to provoke them. China and Japan will πστ be happy to see such fighter in their backyard. |
