Khakhi hires muscle to fight Nigerian menace

Mumbai Police who have often been idolized and identified as bullish and dominant seem to have met their match in the all-muscled Nigerians in the island city.

“In the past, many a times constables including inspectors who had gone to arrest and interrogate Nigerians for their extensive stay or such other complaints in the city, have ended badly injured or been overpowered by them,” said a senior IPS officer requesting anonymity.

According to the police official, around 50-plus bodybuilders and bouncers have been hired by the Mumbai Police to deal with the Nigerian menace.

“We are overpowered and simply left unmatched when these guys (Nigerians) revolt arrest or revoke an attack,” said a crime branch officer who witnessed a gory experience while trying to detain a Nigerian in Mira Road. “One of my constables had caught him with a choke from the back. Within a second that guy bit the constable’s hand so roughly that he had to be operated with seven stitches,” said the officer.

Cops have often complained the ways of these African nationals hitting them below the belt (in reality), biting on ears, noses and arms and also jabbing cops to a bloodied nose or worst.

‘Loha hi Lohe ko kat ta hai’
These athletic bodied and chiseled muscled foreigners many of who are involved in e-banking, lottery scams and narcotics drug peddling are usually over 6-feet and have a background of been a boxer or fighter. “Most of them have a shocking crime stream where they are involved in man-slaughters, rapes, extortions and kidnappings. For them hurting someone or even a cop is very easy,” adds an Anti-Narcotic Cell (ANC) officer.

“Many Nigerians are involved in illegal activities thus we are required to track them and even force them to make a station appearance which is just not possible without the extra muscle. Their dare to attack us has provoked us to use muscle for muscle,” said the ANC officer.

When officers are sent to apprehend these foreigners they are accompanied by five to six bodybuilder bouncers who only step in on the directions of the cops. “It is only when Nigerians fight back or attack that bodybuilders come into the picture. They just help us to fight them off, the law and order will always lie with us,” said the officer.

Certificate and Cash
Bodybuilders and bouncers who are hired by the police have a rewarding experience in this act. “We get paid and also are felicitated with an certificate that states our assistance to the police in maintaining law and order in the city,” said Praveen Mane, a 29-year-old bodyguard from Kalyan who earns around Rs.500 per day acting as the extra-muscle power for the khakhi team.

Apart from busts, arrests these brawny citizens of Mumbai are also asked to help the cops to take them to courts or jails. “I love the job. Apart from the appreciation from cops and money, I get an opportunity to get in the good books of the cops which is a rare deal in this city,” added
