Which Of These Lies Do You Tell Your Doctor? by feltyman(m): 11:09pm On Apr 02, 2013
Good evening everyone! Want to wish us all a happy Easter celebration in arrears! But then something cropped up my dear mind during the weekend while i watched an alcoholic telling his so called 'trusted' Doctor that Alcohol for him is an abomination. oops! so ridiculous it sounds.
Hence, when seeing your doctor, gynecologist, dentist, or other specialist, patients are often faced with the difficulty of answering some tough questions; these questions are tough indeed, for example, “Do you have multiple sexual partners? When was the first time you had a sexual intercourse?’’ or ‘’Do you smoke weed?" depending on the nature of the illness. But because some of these questions could be embarrassing, or a patient doesn’t want to go on a ‘boring lecture spree’ with the doctor, or because he or she doesn’t want to be judged, patients tend to bend the truth a little in the examination room, in some cases totally false answers are given. However, the minutest lie told by a patient might lead to mismanagement and consequently grave danger; patients should try as much as possible to provide the right answers to the following questions frequently asked by physician.

"HOW OFTEN DO YOU TAKE ALCOHOL?’’
The popular lie here is ‘I don’t take alcohol’. You don’t actually have to lie about this, if you consume excessive alcohol, it’s important to let your Doc know since a high consumption of alcohol is linked to liver damages and even breast cancer in women. Also, so as to let your doctor know the choice of drugs to prescribe for you, excess alcohol in blood and body system affects drug metabolism, hence it may seem your doctor’s prescription is not working. SO DO YOU LIE ABOUT ALCOHOL INTAKE?

"DO YOU SMOKE?"
In fact letting your doctor know you smoke and the number of sticks per day would not only lessen the burden on your physical health but also help your specialists devise better ways of managing your psychological health, hence preventing or solving the problem of addiction. Smoking causes premature wrinkling, asthma, and lung cancer, and it also raises your risk for stroke, so you need to be truthful with your doctor about tobacco intake. HOW OFTEN DO YOU DECEIVE YOUR DOCTOR ON YOUR TOBACCO INTAKE?

"DO YOU TAKE ILLICIT DRUGS?"
‘‘I would never do drugs’’! This is a common response of many patients. Off course adolescents and young adults would not want to admit to taking illicit drugs because of the law implication. However these substances can greatly harm your body system and your doctor would only ask about it because it's his or her job to make you as healthy as possible. SO DO YOU LIE ABOUT YOUR SUBSTANCE USE?

“DO YOU PRACTICE UNSAFE SEX"
It's understandable that you don't want to admit that you have casual sex or don't use protection for fear that it may make you seem irresponsible or promiscuous. The problem is unsafe sex can put you at risk of contracting a host of sexually transmitted infections and diseases like HIV and Hepatitis viral infection. It's important to be straight with your Doc so you can be tested. Do YOU LIE ABOUT PRACTISING SAFE SEX?
"DO YOU KEEP FIT ON DAILY BASIS"
Working out for at least 30 minutes a day isn't just for people trying to lose weight. Daily exercise makes your muscles stronger, prevents osteoporosis, strengthens your heart (which prevents heart disease), can lower high blood pressure, and lowers your risk of breast cancer and diabetes. So do it for your health, and not because you don't want to disappoint your doc. Do you lie about how often you exercise?
"DO YOU TAKE YOUR MEDICATIONS AS PRESCRIBED?"
Side effect is one reason why some patients don’t take their medications, other reason might be because the doctor has not explained or educated patient well on importance of drug compliance. However, if patients don't do exactly as their doctor prescribes, they might come back with a relapse. Hence, the best thing is to openly communicate with your doctor about your medications. Find out if there are alternative medications that have fewer side effects. Are you truthful about how you take prescriptions?

"DO YOU PERFORM SELF BREAST EXAMINATION MONTHLY?"
For women, checking your breast every month will help you notice changes in your breast tissue.
So, which of these lies do you 'sincerely' tell your Doctor?

Perhaps, when we stop being judgemental, that will make pple to be more open. De fear of being looked down on makes pple to tell lies even at their own risk.
