Expert Advice On Building A Site From Scratch Or Choosing A Template. by winexviv: 11:00am On Apr 03, 2013
When it comes time to actually build your website you are going to have to decide if you want to build it from scratch or if you want to use a template. There are advantages and disadvantages to both approaches so you will need to decide which is best for your needs.

The obvious advantage of building a website from scratch is that you can build it just the way that you want it. It also allows you to have a site that is completely unique. This offers the advantage of having a site that is perfectly designed to meet your needs and which will really stand out from all of the other sites out there. That being said there are few companies who have a need that is so unique that they can't build a site using a template, there are templates for a huge variety of designs these days.

The major downside of building a website from scratch is that it will take a lot more time, effort and money than using a template would. If you build it from scratch you are going to be doing a lot of rather tedious coding to build the site. This is not all that hard to do but it does take time and it will cost money. In addition if you build your site from scratch you will almost certainly have more bugs than you would if you had used a template. That means that you will have to spend more time testing it and fixing problems.

Using a template presents pretty much the opposite issues. It will be much easier and faster to get your site built and it will probably have fewer bugs that have to be dealt with. The downside here is that you will probably have to make some compromises when it comes to design. You can find a huge variety of templates so there will certainly be something suitable for your site. However it will not necessarily be the optimal design that you would get if you had built the site from scratch.

Ultimately the decision about whether to build from scratch is going come down to your needs and your budget. Large companies with huge budgets will usually build their site from scratch so that they can have it exactly how they want it. Most smaller companies find that using a template is a much more cost effective solution and that they get a site that is perfectly adequate for their needs. In general if you can afford it building a site from scratch is a better way to go but this is also going to depend on what you are using your site for, if you are selling products directly it will be more important than if you are just providing information.
