How To Deal With Bad Mechanics? Advice by Fabiens(m): 10:55pm On Apr 09, 2013
There is a new place we decide to patronise.

The first car we took there was an 2005 Honda. The key wasn't moving freely in the door lock and ignition. They fixed it, having to tamper with the steering wheel column. When they brought it back, the steering wheel was veering left and right. Thinking it was just an alignment issue, we sent it back. It was returned, but with a slight veer to the left. Not a big problem, we decided to ignore (tired of the bills) and move on.

Second car was a Kia Sorento, It too had steering problems. Again assumed it was an alignment issue. When it was returned, noticed the 1st gear engaged painfully, lots of noise, and drag. All other gears were fine. Sent it back, and we were told we had to change clutch plate. Gave the go ahead. Now it was returned today, and this evening, it seems the clutch has given up already. It was a problem just to park the car as (from my little car knowledge), the clutch kept slipping and disconnecting the engine. Had to restart 4 times, just to move about 2 metres. The recent bill of 90k is yet to be paid for. Left to me, I will just refuse to pay this bill and find another auto centre instead of taking it back for another shoddy job.

Opinions?

EDIT: They are not roadside mechanics. Its an auto repair shop, owner just came over from abroad. Used it because it was closer to home.

Yøur best bet is to take the car to an authorised maintenance workshop for that brand of vehicle. 99 percent of common road side mechanics work by trial and error

Most roadside mechanics will deliver shoddy job ....
There is no long lasting piece of mind in trying to cut corners
When you buy a car, the biggest investment in keeping it going is maintenance
Do your research well, use specialist centres who have reasonable prices and vast experiences...
Goodluck!

The only way to deal with a bad mechanic is to avoid a bad mechanic especially the road side ones because once he ensnares you, you are finished. Today it's radiator, tomorrow it's injector.

Nigeria ain't advance like other countries where mechanics are registered and have proper workshop fitted with enough gadgets.

No other option than to keep trying until you get a good one. The truth is, smart guys would rather go for I.T than mechanics

Personally I ditch any mechanic that messes up! It's always better to patronize car maintenance/repair companies rather than illiterate quacks who want to cut corners to make money from you. Many of them will steal parts from your car and replace them with faulty ones so you can always come back to repair or change one thing or the other.

To me the number one trait i look for in a mechanic is honesty, once i find out that a mechanic has been dishonest with me even once, I ditch him! I don't really care about the cost of his services as much as i care about his level of honesty and service

You don't take these kinda cars to roadside mechanics! Most of them learnt their trade using 1960s/70s cars! They know nada about the recent inventions, worst of all, they do not upgrade their knowledge! You may be lucky sometimes sha, but be sure your car will not return the same way it went into their workshop. If you're lucky, you get a big problem solved and get stuck with a smaller(new) problem.
On the mechanic's bill, I guess you pay him fot the materials he bought and deduct his workmanship then move on to a proper diagnostics center.

Most road side mechanics are not dishonest, they sound dishonest because they can't figure out the problem with your car and they keep guessing. They use the fundamental trial by error problem solving method, until they get it right or you get tired of them. My husband was a victim of road side mechanics till we decided to try a professional auto clinic. Mercifully, it's been good so far, though more expensive and sometimes takes longer than the hurry hurry snip and tuck the road side mechanic will do.

Take out time to search for mechanics that have upgraded their basic understanding of electrical auto systems. You are on a long thing if you carry your vehicle to a mechanic without running a scan first.
Re: How To Deal With Bad Mechanics? Advice by SlyIg(f): 12:21pm On Apr 11, 2013
No other way than to sell the car so that you won't ever need a mechanic.
Mechanics are the same everywhere...
Re: How To Deal With Bad Mechanics? Advice by Nobody: 1:00pm On Apr 11, 2013
It could be quite fraustrating having to deal with shoddy mechanics. Some of them have nothing to loose and don't care the consequences of their trial and error diagnostics. A mechanic once took my vehicle to Ibadan without my knowledge or approval, only got to know because the police arrested him for rough driving and thus the beans spilled.

I think the proper solution is getting the right mechanic. U know, someone who is interested in preserving his integrity.
I drive an infinity car. I got introduced to my mechanic by my dad. And believe me when I say this guy is good. On one occassion when I needed to change my shock absorbers, he insisted I came with him to Ladikpo. Just so I have an idea of the price and could get these myself whenever I am ready. He is more of a name person and not a money person and is doing well for himself(drives a corolla 2001)
So, to answer ur question, you'll need to get a good mech. That's the best way to deal with the shoddy once. I would have to confirm if he wants me to drop his number on line

Nothing can be done mate, it's the same all the world but NIGERIA is thw WORST of all.

As long as it's TRADES MEN, It's in their nature to feeble to make quick money, Big companies in Uk do a lot things to make money but they'll definitely do the job with GUARANTEE as well as the local one.

Big company in Nigeria will take your money and nothin will be done.

What a country, full of BAD PEOPLE including families.
