I need some advice please! My younger brother is currently studying an undergraduate course in Software Engineering at American University of Nigeria Yola. Their summer holidays are quite long (May to August). In a bid to keep him busy, I am proposing he learns a foreign language by going for an immersion language course for 8 weeks so he will live with a host family and attend 20 language classes a week in either Latin America or Spain for Spanish and France or Switzerland for French. Now the question is which international language is best to learn. French or Spanish?

I would personally advise him to learn French. My answer may sound cliche but french is more recognised world wide than spanish.

Besides, there are many francophone countries in Africa which may help your bro in the future if he understands the basics of their language- french.

I just finished a french programme and I feel it should be closer to the English language compared to spanish (not sure; I may be wrong).
