A lot of people may not know this, but Crayfish is actually a very worthy substitute for magi - has a lot of health benefits too. Also, try Ogiri (hate the smell tho) depending on the food i.e Oha, Onugbo and even Ogbono - its very good for the eyes Efurun is also quite good but does cause wheezing when sniffed in its raw state (even tho it does not contain MSG). Plus, I'm sure the wheezing property will be greatly reduced after its been used in cooking. others are; white pepper, black pepper, ginger, thyme, garlic and some coriander won't hurt i guess. Bon apetit 1 Like |

Just load it up with Crayfish. Everything tastes better with Crayfish. SPECIAL WARNING: Garlic is also excellent but please do not use garlic alongside pepper! If you must use pepper at all with garlic, then just one pinch!! The day I tried using garlic on my already pepper garnished food, omo see Gobe. 1 Like |
Secret seasoning without Maggi are 1. Garlic (Powder or wet paste) 2. Ginger (Powder or wet paste) 3. Locust bean i.e Iru in Yoruba (grounded or seeds) Combination of two or three of this seasons, gives your food a taste you wouldn't resist. As for the garlic you can use little quantity. This is tested and approve by folks around me, you can try it also and come back to comment your result. This combinations also have lots of health benefit which can help your family also... Good-luck
U' said my mind, those combinations are grt, in addition wit locust bean and crayfish... |

Use ogiri instead aka dadawa in hausa! And locust bean in english. That's if u can stomach the smell. Its quit tasty anyway and I use it only for soups. Then my stews/porridge/ jollofs I use garlic, ginger, coriander, thyme, parsley, sage, basil, and sometimes cumin and then salt! With these combos I don't need MSGs in my cooking. |

I once stopped using maggi and my hubby never knew I stopped using it, i went out of stock of the seasoning I turned to and start using maggi again. People of old never used maggi. Iru (locust beans), ogiri (don't know the english name), you can get it from igbo people if you reside in lagos. I was then using, locust beans(iru), garlic and ginger. I use ginger and garlic to cook my meat/fish/chicken, blend iru and onions, with a little pinch of salt, without maggi you will enjoy it. You will like the soup and the mix of fish/meant with those ingredient. However, pls when you buy iru, wash it before using it, don't wash too much in order not to wash off the real sweetening. I don't buy ogiri again cos I can't wash it, I no wan chop idoti. |
