The University of Lagos has emerged overall best in Nigeria in a National Petroleum & gas Engineering quiz competition held recently at Nsukka.

The event witnessed students of Petroleum & Gas Engineering, Geology, and other related disciplines drawn from different Universities in Nigeria and sub-Sahara Africa who converged for the 3-day event. There were 24 different Universities present which cut across Nigeria and Sub-Sahara Africa namely, Ghana, Kenya, and Uganda, with a total attendant of over 250 students.

The event titled: The way forward for growing Africa’s Oil & Gas Reserves through human Capital Development Technology and sustainable Government Policies witnessed Petro Quiz Competition, Technical Paper presented among others. The Petro Quiz competition was a challenge contest among students from different Universities to test their knowledge of Petroleum engineering in the areas of Reservoir Engineering, Production Engineering, Drilling Engineering, Mathematics, general Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) among others.

The UNILAG Quiz team comprises of 5 students fought doggedly and tenaciously in a contest of 4 rounds and clinched the coveted first position in the Petro quiz competition involving 24 different Universities nationwide. The winning team comprises: Aregbe Azeez, Oluwadairo Kayode who are Unilag Team Captain, and Coach respectively with Muoghara Justine, all in final year while Godis Israel and Adeyemi Ahmed are in their Penultimate year.

The society of Petroluem Engineers (SPE) UNILAG team qualified from first round with other Universities in the group which include: Anambra State University (ANSU) Uli, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Ile-Ife etc. The team then proceeded to defeat University of Port Harcourt with 47 points against 36 points in the second round. UNILAG went further to defeat University of Nigeria Nsuka (UNN) being the host University with 42 points aganst 37 points in the third round.

The winning UNILAG team further defeated three other Universities that qualified for the final round namely: Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO); Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) Awka; and Lagos State University (LASU) Ojo. With this outstanding performance, the University of Lagos emerged first in the national competition with FUTO won the second position with 20 points; UNIZIK and LASU won the 3rd and 4th positions respectively.

The event also witnessed an award presented to Prof. Kehinde of the Dept. Chemical Engineering, University of Lagos for his selfless contribution. A new feature the conference was the Shell Master Class Recruitment, and career seminar. It was indeed insightful and informative about Shell’s recruitment strategy, its core values, what they stand for, and what Shell looks for in prospective job applicants and graduate job seekers.

 As the University of First choice, and the nation’s pride, and a top class institution of excellence that Unilag is, the Team members will enjoy a 3-day all expense paid trip to the 37th Edition of NAICE conference @ the Eko Hotels & Suites, Victoria Island Lagos.

They will also be given an undisclosed amount.  Prof. Rahaman Bello; Vice Chancellor University of Lagos; Prof L. O. Oyekunle, Head, Dept. of Chemical Engineering; Dr. Kingsley Abhuliman, Faculty Sponsor, Unilag; expressed delight in the students performances. Delta State University (DELSU) Abraka, and Abubakar Tafawa Belewa University (ATBU) Bauchi; will host the 12th and 13th Editions of the Annual Competition respectively.

uniport was first in 2011, and second in 2012.

always represented.

Kudos to Unilag but any1 who knows anything about SPE in Nigerian schools knows U.I's SPE student chapter has been n still is d stand out chapter.
