One out of every three children is overweight or obese, KidsHealth reports. Overfeeding of children is one reason why the childhood overweight and obesity rates are climbing at an alarming rate. The physical and mental health consequences of feeding children too much can be devastating during childhood and into adulthood.
Weight Gain
When your child is overweight, she is in the 85th percentile for body mass index, and when she is obese, she is in the 95th percentile. Your child's BMI is a measure of body fat, so the higher the BMI, the heavier your child is. The types of food your child eats contributes to an elevated BMI. If your child regularly eats high-calorie foods, such as fast food, pizza, potato chips, cookies, cake and soda, she is likely consuming more caloriesthan she needs. Make an appointment with your child's pediatrician if you suspect that she is overweight or obese. The doctor can work with your child to develop a healthy eating plan that will enable her to shed excess pounds and reach a healthy weight.
Health Risks
When you overfeed your child and she gains an unhealthy amount of weight, it can increase her risk of certain health conditions. Your child's riskof type 2 diabetes is elevated if she weighs too much. The childhood rate of type 2 diabetes has increased more than 10 fold since 1982, the"Environmental Health Perspectives" journal reports. Carrying excess weight also contributes to an increased risk of sleep apnea, high blood pressure and heart disease. Your child might also experience bone or joint problems, shortness of breath, early puberty, liver disease and gallbladder disease. Eating more than she needs and gaining too much weight might prevent your child from exercising, which also contributes to anincreased risk of health problems.
Self-Esteem Issues
Many children tend to compare themselves with their peers. If your child is overweight or obese, she can experience self-esteem and depression issues that stem from her body image. A 2000 study published in "Pediatrics" reports that obese children can be at an increased risk of poor self-esteem. Low self-esteem can lead to higher rates of sadness, loneliness and nervousness. Long-term self-esteem issues can increase your child's risk of dangerous behaviors such as smoking and drinking alcohol. Self-esteem issues are more likely to affect your child during adolescence when body image becomes an importantpart of peer interactions and feelings of self-worth.
Solutions
Feed your child a variety of nutritious foods suchas fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat milk and cheese and lean beef, pork, chicken and fish. Serving your child these foods makes it more difficult to overfeed her because they are more nutrient dense, which means they fill her up and keep her full longer. Foods with fiber and protein fuel your child's body and help keep her from getting hungry, which can encourage her to eat less food overall. These foods also supply the vitamins and minerals your child needs for healthygrowth. Encourage your child to take part in healthy meal planning and preparation and she'll be more likely to eat nutritious foods. Keep high-fat and high-calorie foods out of your house.Replace them with nutrient-dense snacks that are low in calories. Pack your child's lunch and send healthy snacks along as well. Research restaurant menus ahead of time so your child can choose an appetizing meal that is also nutritious. Add exercise to your child's daily routine as well. Getting active will improve her overall health, help prevent chronic health problems and enable her to shed excess pounds.
