A medical expert, Dr. A. Akinola, told Lagos top shots that out of the 100 percent Maternal Deaths in the world, Nigeria constitutes 10 percent and that out of every 100,000 women in Nigeria, every 545 die as a result of pregnancy in a year. He explained that; “In 2010, Lagos state Government carried out a survey on the real cause(s) of maternal death, the result revealed that Alimosho Local Government Area tops the list with a total of 826 deaths followed by Ibeju-Lekki LGA with a total of 758. The lowest is in Lagos Island LGA with a total of 110. Dr Akinola also said that records reveal that in Nigeria today, about 145 women die on daily basis as a result of pregnancy. In a bid to reduce the frightening number of deaths due to pregnancy in Lagos state, the Ministry of Health recently flagged off an annual sensitization programme on the reduction of Maternal and Child Mortality at Iberekodo Primary School premises, Ibeju-Lekki. The programme will subsequently hold in the three senatorial districts of the state. On the roll call at the occasion was the Special guest of honour, wife of Lagos State Governor, Mrs Dame Abimbola Fashola, Senator representing Lagos East Senatorial District, Gbenga Ashafa, Commissioner for Health, Dr Jide Idris and the medical expert, Dr. Rotimi Akinola. Others include: Abike Dabiri, the host Chairman,Ibeju-Lekki, Kemi Suraka, Tola Kasali, former Lagos State deputy Governor, Sarah Adebisi Sosan, Special Adviser on Public Health, Dr Yewande Adesina among others.
