'nigeria Has Second Highest Child, Maternal Mortality Rates'

James Azania, Benin

With an estimated 608 deaths per 100,000 deliveries, Nigeria ranks second only to India in the list of nations with the worst child mortality.

According to Women Health and Action Research Centre, an organisation committed to the promotion of intimate and reproductive health and social well-being of women and adolescents, out of 100,000 women that enter labour rooms, 50 of them do not come out alive.

With the figure (death of 50 women), the group said Nigeria also ranked second in the global number of maternal deaths.

The Chief Executive Officer of the centre, Prof. Friday Okonofua, said at a dissemination workshop on 'Assessment of Infection Control Practices in Delivery Care Units in Edo State,' that three major factors were responsible for the high maternal mortality in Nigeria.

They are bleeding after birth, pregnancy hypertension and post-delivery infections.

He said, "Studies, including data from Edo State have shown that up to four out of 10 Nigerian women experiencing puerperal infections die from the complication.

"Besides, maternal mortality in Edo State reflects the national average. Maternal health is presently not prioritised by the state government."

According to Okonofua the "results demonstrate the lack of appropriate policies and practices relating to infection control in maternal units in Edo State, given that puerperal sepsis is the third leading cause of maternal mortality in the country."

Worried by the lack of data on maternity care and puerperal sepsis in health facilities, the centre recommended that record keeping be prioritised as an important strategy to monitor the outcomes of infection control measures.

The workshop, which had in attendance officials from the state ministry of health, women affairs, health workers from public and private health institutions, accused governments of insensitivity to the problems of women. http://odili.net/news/source/2011/sep/13/824.html

This is very Sad news for Africa leading oil producing nation. Child and Mother medical facility are given priority in any country developing or developed but it would seem that Nigeria's case is different.

Easy to explain.

High levels of illiteracy leads to high birth rate leads to poverty, grin

Sad thing is even on here you have posters talking about multiple wives and such, just mindnumbing.

You sorry buzzards need to wake up and realise that having multiple wives and kids is just primitive and archaic.

Name a country with high birth rates and i'll show you a faling state with crippling socio-economic problems left and right.

And the reason,Nigeria's child birth and infant mortality rates are high is simply the soaring illiteracy in the North, its a fact that can't be denied,by percentage more northerenrs are less educated and are predisposed to have large families with lots of children,by stark illiterate mothers and fathers, because they have not embraced education as much as southern nigerians. wink

If the north-east and north-west zones were countries, they would be number one and number 2 on that list. What's worse is than we haven't made made any real progress in reducing the number of deaths over the last decade. We're standing still in some areas and moving backwards in others. The only state government does more than pay lip service to healthcare is Lagos. The others just make noise on TV, arrange big public launchings (free healthcare for all pregnant women! Hooray!! See dividends of democracy!) then refuse to fund even the most basic health or sanitation programs therefore leaving ordinary people to their own devices.

I guess that's what you get when you keep voting PDP every 4 years. May god save us all.

That's all that needs to be said. You hear things like "Nigeria has highest blah blah" but if you are not Nigerian, you won't know the problem is isolated to a particular area. When you have 60 year old men marrying 14 year old girls and resistance to "White Medicine", that's what you get.

We need to embrace family planning for us to effectively reduce child and maternal mortality

Maternal mortality and perinatal mortality will continue to be high in Nigeria especially in the north eastern part due to certain prevailing factors. Illiteracy, poverty, religious & cultural beliefs are major reasons patients don't seek medical attention (primary delay).
Secondary delay is usually caused by lack of basic infrastructures like health centres, roads, telephone & ambulance services, lack of means of transportation & the security situation in the country.
Tertiary delay usually occur in the hospital due to lack of medical personnel & equipment, lack of blood transfusion services & attitude & expertise of health personnel.
The poor funding of the health sector & mismanagement of funds by administrators has worsened the situation. All hands must be on deck if we desire to resolve the crisis.
