The 10 Worst Places To Be A Mother by Nigerianschools: 7:27pm On May 12, 2013 |
According to the Annual Save Our Children Mother's Index, the ten worst places to be a mother are all in Africa. The Index, which is in its 14th year, looks at multiple factors when comprising the list - including death in pregnancy and childbirth as well as hardships faced by mothers after they give birth. The bottom 10 are Ivory Coast Chad Nigeria Gambia Central African Republic Niger Mali Sierra Leone Somalia Democratic Republic of the Congo. The scores are put together based on child mortality, maternal health, education, women's income and women's political status. In the African countries which appear in the bottom 10 of the list, the outlook for mothers is poor as they one in seven of them is likely to lose a child under the age of five, while one in 30 of them is likely to die of a complication arising from pregnancy. According to the report, "Babies in Somalia have the highest risk of dying on their birth day. First-day death rates are almost as high in Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mali, and Sierra Leone. Mothers in these four countries are also at high risk on this day. Mothers in Somalia and Sierra Leone face the second and third highest lifetime risk of maternal death in the world, respectively." The report continues, "Maternal, child and newborn death rates have declined across the developing world since 1990, but progress has been slowest in sub-Saharan Africa. Save the Children’s annual Mothers’ Index assesses the well-being of mothers and children in 176 countries. The bottom 10 countries on the Mothers’ Index are all in sub-Saharan Africa. Not surprisingly, many of these same countries also have very high rates of first-day death, and sub-Saharan Africa also occupies the 10 worst spots on the Birth Day Risk Index. Seven countries – Central African Republic, Chad, Côte d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mali, Sierra Leone and Somalia – score in the bottom 10 on both indices."
