Your analysis is wrong in this case, though that's how the "chess game" is 99.9% of the time. In the case of Syria, the deal for the s-300 was signed time ago...and Russia's just fulfilling part of the deal, just to counter the arms race against the West. Russia is knee-deep in the Syrian crisis and it'll stand-by Assad till his tenure ends in 2014. Just know that everything Assad says is straight from the mouth of Messr Putin.

Also, Russia has strategic interests in Syria - its only military base is in Tartus, Syria. And the whole crisis is all about the Iran-Syria-Iraq gas pipeline(which Russian gas giant, Gazprom, has interests in) and Iran-Syria-Hezbollah link. The west is trying to make the latter weak, and the former not feasible.

Russia has been talking tough since the Syrian crisis started, and I don't think that will change any time soon. Just pay attention to what the Russian deputy foreign minister said about, "making the HOTHEADS have a rethink about intervention." Putin is desperately trying to get the carcass of the old Soviet bloc back to life - and Syria's very strategic to Russian interests.

The s-300 is already in Syria. Israel's just blowing hot-air as usual, before Assad+Hezbollah open another front in the Syrian war via Golan. Hassan Nasrallah(head of Hezbollah) already spoke about volunteers and fighting Israel via Syrian this weekend - and Assad has become bolder after getting a go-ahead from Iran and Russia, to get Israel involved in the war. If Israel gets involved - that would turn the war into Arabs vs. Israel - and save Syria.

TechRev: The S300 if supplied to Syria could affect commercial flights in and out of Israel because of its long range radar. Besides, once the equipment is on Syrian hands, it would take Syrian army time to master its operation, enough time for Israel to locate and destroy them and wait for another supply.

Don't let the Israel's attack on Syria fool you - the rebel destroyed the Syrian radar system in that part of Syria before the Israeli jet attacks(that's one of the reason why most analysts believe Israeli intelligence is working with the Syrian rebels).
