The Debased Mind by shdemidemi(m): 11:16am On Jun 05, 2013
In today's world, the persistent and varying degree of evil deeds have become so common, they no longer register as news to the human ears. The society (you and I) most times are unable to understand why or how the perpetrators can result to such grievous/outrageous evil acts. In an attempt to reason it out, we associate such evil acts to genetic and psychological disorders, economic circumstances, juvenile delinquency, family neglect or break downs, to the point where they have become acceptable to many in the bid to avoid being tagged as politically incorrect, judgemental and discriminatory.

Regardless of the human perspective or categorisation of these acts, it is imperative as saints (God's chosen people) to know, understand and adhere to the Biblical views (God's view) on these issues. This will ensure that we are not ignorant and easily dissuaded from the truth of God's word. The Scripture makes it clear to us, the various evils known to Man, (based on ungodliness) their effect on the Word of God and the damnable consequences on doers of such evil.

Romans 1:18
The wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all manner of unrighteousness or ungodliness of Men; who through their evil and wicked ways, they hinder the truth of God's word and make it inoperative. (Amp Bible)

So what then does the scripture mean by “the unrighteousness and ungodliness of Men”? This simply refers to the resultant effect of Man's complete refusal to recognise, acknowledge, accept and reverence the supremacy of God. Man did not consider God as one worthy to be known or even give thanks to. When ungodliness or unrighteousness reigns in Man, he/she is said to be in “darkness”. In this state, he becomes “blind” to the obvious or visible attributes of God which He has revealed to Man through His many creations, eternal power and divine nature. So that we can see, understand and reverence Him from His creations. And though we constantly behold around us the variety and divinity of His creations, yet Man has chosen to deliberately ignore Him, replacing His worship with the worship of idols.

One of the consequences of being in “darkness” is that Man began to worship and ascribe glory to God’s creatures (animals, birds, images of mere men) rather than God – the Creator Himself (Romans 1:23). This is based on the futility of his imaginations or reasoning, which is translated into his actions (the evil acts) making him believe he is wise and starts to become a god unto himself.

Some of the few evil acts known and seen around us today, no longer making news to our senses include Homosexuality, Lesbianism and Bi-sexuality, to mention a few. Many today, view these as natural and acceptable deeds to the society and even the Church of God. The level of acceptance in some countries/states has brought about its legalisation thereby further promoting these deeds as acceptable in schools, work establishments, communities and churches.

The questions therefore are: why the legal system requires Churches to accept and perform the solemnisation ceremonies of homosexuals? Why is this legal obligation not placed on other religious groups such as the Muslims, Hindus, and Sikhs etc? Could it be that Christians and church leaders are too ignorant of what the Biblical view is? Or is the Church such a compromising group? Hence, we are unable to speak against such legal obligations? Or is it because within the Church, these evil acts exist and are practised? And we could be shooting ourselves in the foot when we speak out against it?

Regardless, of the many likely reasons, the Church of God ought to stand firm and speak out against the acceptance of such legal obligations. Our reverence and allegiance should be to God – our Creator not to His creature (man). We should continuously strive to restore dignity to our faith and ensure that the peace of our faith is not translated into ignorance or a lack of focus.

So how does Man arrive at accepting and living as a Homosexual, Bi-sexual and Lesbian? As described earlier, when Man is in a state of “darkness”, evil is perceived as good, unnatural things are perceived as natural things, he/she becomes a god to self doing what ought not to be done - otherwise described in the scriptures as a “Debased Mind”. The word “Debased” by the dictionary is defined as a reduction in character, value, quality, rank, dignity or significance.

We can therefore deduce that a darkened or debased mind is revealed when man falls out of fellowship with God; disregarding His existence or supremacy, he/she begins to reduce in self dignity, character and value, exchanging natural things for unnatural and seeing evil as good. The evidence of which is revealed when a man is sexually attracted to and performs sexual acts with another man (Homosexual); a woman is sexually attracted to and performs sexual acts with another woman (Lesbianism); and a man or woman who is sexually attracted to and performs sexual acts with a man and a woman (Bi-sexual).

These minds, have exchanged the natural relationships (as designed by God) for unnatural ones. Such not seen as natural even amongst animals. Animals that reproduce or mate are only known to do so with a like animal of the opposite sex. Even the scientific law of attraction and repulsion tells us that ‘like to like’ repels but ‘like to opposite’ attracts. When translated to humans or animals, according to God's original design, a man should only be sexually attracted to a woman; likewise, a woman should only be sexually attracted to man. This divine design is revealed in Genesis 2:18, when God decided that “it was not good for man to be alone and he created a woman from the man as a helper fit for him”. Therefore, it is not God's design for a man to forsake the natural relationship with a woman and begin to commit lustful and shameful sexual relationship with another man or for a woman to have shameful sexual relationship with another woman.

In so doing, they dishonour their bodies, claiming to have been born with such mind/attraction but really they tell a lie in exchange for the truth of God. They devalue their sexual significance as designed by God failing to recognise the distinct speciality of each sex for companionship, pleasure and functionality (reproduction). They try to convince the society that the architect of their human design (God) may have gotten it all wrong from the beginning. In return the society has ignorantly or compulsively accepted this lie and promoted the acceptance of such evil. And although they are fully aware of God's decree on such evil acts, they continue to live in this ungodliness; they even approve and praise others for doing the same (Romans: 1:32).

A debased mind as earlier described, is a mind, which has fallen out of fellowship with God; a mind, which has not considered God worthy to be known. From this mind, some other acts of evil is also revealed and these include covetousness, greed, malice, envy, jealousy, murder, deceit, secret backbiters, gossipers, slanderers, haters of God, disobedient and undutiful to parents. The consequence for these acts of ungodliness and unrighteousness, according to scripture, is that the doers will operate from a condemned mind, doing improper or indecent things. (Romans 1: 28-30)

So now we know the explicit view of the scripture; shall we continue in silence and allow mockery to persist upon Christianity? Or shall we continue to fear and respect fellow men at the expense of the word of Truth (or the Creator)? It is time for the Church to arise and align fully with the word of God standing together as one to dissociate from all unrighteousness or ungodliness described by the scripture. The scripture says we (Saints) are the light of the world and as light; we ought to direct or point those in darkness towards the light by acknowledging and reverencing God.

The truth in His word and His love for all who believe in His only begotten Son should be the driving force to lead all in darkness to the knowledge of God. For in this knowledge, man is able to accept God through his belief. He gradually begins to discern good from evil through the constant hearing of His word, which will lead to a renewing of his mind turning away from evil.
