Lagos, Nigeria - Seven tertiary hospitals in Nigeria have been equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and personnel to undertake kidney transplant, the local VANGUARD newspaper quoted the Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, as saying Thursday in Abuja, the Nigerian capital city.

It also quoted the minister, who was speaking at the 2013 Ministerial Platform, as also saying that the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital had the capacity to undertake open heart surgery
.

The minister said: “With this achievements and improvement in the health sector, there is no need for anyone to leave Nigeria to other countries for medical treatment, apart from cases where we do not have expertise in Nigeria because no country in the world can provide all the health needs of its people”.

He noted that in an effort to ensure that Nigerians imbibed healthy lifestyle, his ministry was intensifying efforts and collaborating with members of the National Assembly to ensure that the tobacco bill became law.

This, according to him, will moderate the smoking habit of the people and prevent them from contracting deadly diseases, such as cancer, lungs diseases and many others.

“In the same vein, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, is also reviewing its laws to provide stiffer penalty for fake drug manufacturers and importers,” he stressed.

The minister also revealed that, “very soon, herbal medicine will soon be introduced in our medical schools. This is because before you treat any disease, you must have the ability to diagnose it and administer the needed treatment. Herbal medicine practitioners will be given the needed training to perform optimally. ”

He charged Nigerians to embrace the various health insurance programmes introduced by the National Health Insurance Scheme, NHIS, stressing that for Nigerians to have access to affordable, effective and efficient healthcare services, health insurance was the way to go.

Also speaking at the platform, the Minister of State for Health, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, said that between 2009 to 2012, Nigeria had been able to reduce maternal mortality rate by 47 per cent.

He assured that with the current efforts of the President Jonathan-led government, polio would soon be a thing of the past in the country.

“Since the beginning of this year, we have had only 25 polio cases in the country which are mainly from the states like Borno and Yobe which are bedeviled with security challenges,” he noted.

Pate reiterated that the effort of the federal government had led to the successes recorded in the total eradication of guinea worm diseases, for which the World Health Organisation (WHO) will give Nigeria guinea worm free certification this month.

“Meningitis outbreak has also become a thing of the past in this country,” he stressed

Our political leaders should first show good examples by patronizing Nigerian hospitals. When a Minister developes a toothache, he flies to Germany to see a dentist. Does it make sense? When they are treated in Nigeria for ailments, ordinary Nigerians like us will be encouraged to do the same. cool cool

D problem with Nigerians is that majority of us accept whatever we are told without asking questions!

GEJ and the minister cannot claim (and of course they've not claimed) that these 7 hospitals have not been undertaking kidney transplant surgeries before this administration!!

Thus, the headline is in bad taste! If the minister feels they equipped these 7 teaching hospitals with the 'state of the art equipments', don't we deserve to know what was spent and what was bought!!! So, the pictures represents all the billions d ministry got as allocations in 2 years? Politicians have a way of swindling Nigerians sha!!! If not, why wil anyone see these as the achievements of the federal ministry of health in 2 years?

Just like in other sectors, GEJ has not in anyway done anything significant in the health sector...Why was his wife not treated in Nigeria? Is it not a slap on his face that his wife could not be treated in the country he presides over? To make matters worse, they even have the audacity to lay claim to achievements in hospitals they do not believe in!!!
If the Minister of health has kidney failure tomorrow (God forbid) i'm sure he will abandon the so called state of the art facilities and travel to Germany...So,what are they celebrating?
On a sarcastic note, it is instructive to note that GEJ's brother was treated in Nigeria (Aso Rock hospital) for what was described as 'minor sickness',but quite sadly, he died!!! Patience Jonathan was hospitalised in Germany and at a point, she said she was dead for many days...Today, she's hale and hearty!!! Is this not an ironical description of the way things are in this country?

*So. In what way has GEJ transformed or ingested 'fresh air' to our health care system? His family, ministers and associates fly out to treat headache and malaria while the masses are left to visit the slaughter slabs they call hospitals!!
Mandela has never been flown out of his country for treatment...Is SA not an African country like Nigeria? How can such happen in Nigeria when Nigerians unwittingly support politicians that create a separate world for themselves and a different one for the masses! What is good for d goose should be good for the gander!!!

True talk bro and when any of these high class government officials or their relations are treated there.
Another thing is, will they maintain the hospital?

We know you must just look for something negative to say but dont make it look too obvious. Being too negative and bad-bellism is not good for your health

If they patronise the hospitals, you think it will be announced on TV? You only get to hear when they go abroad because then the media notices they are out of the country. Just accept that this is a good thing and stop trying to make it look bad. It wont work... grin

most of these politicians or rich men travel abroad not because there are no facilities here, but because they want people to know that they are rich. (you now when you tell someone that you just got back from London to treat head ache, he/she will be like; wow, he is rich.)

number 2. which is think its the most important, is the experience of the doctors in our hospitals. there are some sickness that cannot be handled by these doctors due to lack of experience or proper training. there are some neurotic problems that we don't even have doctors for in Africa. that's my 2 cent sha

**sneezes**
its a different thing to have a specialist hospitals and another thing to have specialist doctors. Hope its not the doctor that would give you drip because you have catarrh.

We don't need them to patronise the facilities, what matters is for the facilities to be of great standard and affordable to the ordinary citizens.
If they like, let them go to the moon for their own treatment, as long as we that can't afford a moon trip and afford the ones provided and it solves our health needs, the rest na dem know.
Kudos to this achievement.
