Customers Close Accounts With Gtb Plc Due To Increase Of Fraud In The Bank by FunmyKemmy(f): 8:50am On Jun 19, 2013
GTBank`s customers now wonder how safe their money is with the financial institution over the managing director, Segun Agbaje’s inability to curb the high increase of fraud in the bank.

In same vein, customers of the Bank are beginning to close their accounts with the Bank.

*Benco News *reliably gathered that another mind bogging fraud scandal recently hit the bank following fresh revelation of how two officials of the bank in Ibadan were arraigned recently before an Ibadan Chief
Magistrates Court for allegedly stealing N4.9 million.

The two officials - Quadri Azeez and Oluwatayo Tosin - were arraigned for forgery and stealing the said sum from a customer`s account.

A third accused, Awotunde Oluwafemi, who was said to be the recipient of the stolen sum, was also arraigned for forgery and stealing.

The prosecutor, Insp. Sunday Ogunremi, claimed that Azeez and Tosin forged the bank local currency fund transfer instrument with different serial numbers to collect the total sum between July 21, 2011 and Dec. 2, 2011.

Ogunremi said the offences contravened Section 516,467,427and 390(9) of the Criminal Code Cap 38 Vol. II Laws of Oyo State 2000.

It will also be recalled that in December 2012, whilst other banks were closing their end of the year books in peace and fanfare, Segun Agbaje, the managing director of Guarantee Trust Bank had sleepless nights over a huge
sum of money that developed wings and flew out of the bank`s vault through some of its crooked staff at the information technology department.

According to inside sources, we reliably gathered that, a whopping sum of N850m (eight hundred and fifty million Naira only) belonging to the multinational oil firm, Total Nigeria Unlimited has been moved out of the
oil company`s account from the vault of Guarantee Trust Bank.

The scam which was tagged fraud of the year by detectives in Area F Police Command where the case was reported has seen some staff of GTB been detained at the Police Command while the bank`s management has started running from pillar to post to cover the embarrassing situation.

We were informed that, some crooked staff at the IT department of GTB hacked into one of the tellers` systems in Central Business District, Alausa branch and moved out the N850m out twice, the money, we gathered
further was transferred via bank drafts into an account belonging to a Mallam trading under a bureau de change name, BDC Bureau De Change in Abuja.

Similarly, a 27- year old banker has been arrested and arraigned at an Itire Magistrate’s Court, Lagos, for allegedly defrauding customers to the tune of N3.1million.

The defendant, Ogunji Adediran, an employee with the Guarantee Trust Bank, GTB), was said to have stolen the money at different occasions in July this year.

Prosecuting Inspector, Ezekiel Ayorinde, told the court that Ogunji fraudulently deducted money from the accounts of customers without their consent.

Ayorinde alleged that the defendant opened a pseudo account where he deposited the loot, adding that he also suppressed deposit tellers of some customers.

The practice, according to Ayorinde, continued until some of the customers started complaining about their missing monies.

He alleged that the defendant used the money to secure admission abroad as well as gave some yet to be identified persons part of it.

He told the court that his alleged offence contravened Section 285 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos, 2011.

Efforts to speak with Mrs. Lola Odedina, Group Head, Corporate Communication of GTBank, to react on the report proved abortive as her mobile number was not reachable as at press time.

But that's possible with any bank now undecided...nothing to panic about. Just keep your account under close supervision.
