Blame it on the government! Such buildings should be demolished before they collapse! The Average life expectancy of a building isn't more 100yrs! And am sure this building wastn't renovated nor maintained periodically to extend its life span yet it met wit its basic functional requirements for several yrs! Kudos to the Builders!
May God comfort d fams of d victims!

Building a 3-storey building from mud...

And using archaic engineering....

No test for strength of materials, bulk modulus, expansitivity and other building parameters...

So, wetin una expect? The building even try since the 80s twas built till now.

Amazing..... A multi-storey structure such as a 6- storey building designed using persmissible stress method nd constructed on a load bearing wall lasted 4 a 101 years...well, d building tried shal cos dat was acient method of design less compared 2 nowadays method of design... I mean (limit state method) where we design against future purposes/usage nd where safety factor is highly considered nd where d structure/ building is 2 b constructed in frame structure so as 2 minimising d loads down 2 d foundation.... I tells every1 dat we civil engineers of nowadays can erect a 10-storey building dat wil last 4 centuries...engr igho says so

NEMA said the building was built in the 80s according to the article, why then are some people still saying it's 101 years old. I pray those trapped under the rubble make it alive, not a good experience at all. Just that some people like to risk their lives even when the signs are evident that a building may likely collapse due to its level of dilapidation. Personally, i can't live in any building that i suspect is likely to collapse not to even talk of one that is glaringly quarter to collapse. I blame poverty sometimes.

From where I come, we preserve old buildings and make them part of our local history. Their was an old hotel that was to be demolished, but citizens got enough signed petitions for the planned demolition to be cancelled. The hotel was remodeled and is now a residence for those in need.

There's a historic school not too far from here. Built in 1869 and remodeled continually. The school is still in use. Again, I suppose that's asking for too much in Nigeria.

Who's bickering?

If these buildings were properly maintained, then they more than likely wouldn't be endangered in the first place. Why is it that we can build but not properly maintain?

wht the hell do you mean and quit beign sarcastic abt other people's misfortune. there are buildings over a thousand years old still standing in other parts of the world. even here in naija there are older buildings tht are still standing.

The issue is nt abt the age of a structure but our recklessness towards safety is often the cause of these mishaps.

may the souls of the dead RIP!

... Yes, you are correct, the building should have been maintained .. but to now debate about making such a building a historical site (or posting a pic of a historical school in Sacramento, CA) is not the right discussion to have while people are being rescued. I know you are a mod here and so I expected more situation awareness.. but perhaps I'm being sensitive - KD is home to me ..

I posted it as an example. If I make a point, I like to back my claims before being called a liar. I'm not being insensitive, and you shouldn't take offense in what I'm saying. You should take offense to those who didn't maintain a building and it deemed it a safe place for residents and vendors. For a building to collapse out of nowhere, it means it should have been blocked for either restoration or demolition.

I disagree with this. 101 yrs old? The oldest storey building in Kaduna is in Kakuri, and its not up to 70 years old.
I was @ the scene. Just at the back of St. Joseph catholic cathedral in the kaduna central market. I couldn't take any pix as the whole perimeter has been bounded off by the army and police. Mehn that building is quite very scary, I once thought this will happen in the nearest time.
