Hi People,
I really need serious advice.
I just started work with a telecommunication company; fantastic i must say.
I just got called for to come and pick up my offer letter with oceanic bank.
I totally forgot about hearing from them after a long wait.
What do i do?
I studied English, my family prefers the telecoms job cos of time.
But that bank? the offer is tempting.

I have to sincerely let you know that with telecomms, u have to specialise if you want to attain higher heights, i.e you must have a specialty(electronic engineering, software experts, and database personnel with skills etc). These acumen would make place you above the crowd.Telecomms is a more conducive environment to work, training is continuous, and you meet and relate with brainy people(no experience wt telecomms though, but as a lay person)
In banking(Oceanic in particular), at inception, it is not worth the while, you are an apprentice, i can say this from experience, i have a masters degree in Info Science, yet, am working as a Cash Officer,imagine? In the long run, the higher you go, the better it becomes, but With God ni sha o!!! Working from Dawn -dusk is the name of banking, especially if you are a rookie, i thank God that banking is putting food on my table, but, give it a deep(est) thought before taking a life-determining future.

am happy for u guy but i will really advice u to go 4 the telecom job as banking is really white slavery here in nigeria. work and die , no time to even go and develop yourself academically.

don't try what you are about to do o! don't ever think of going into banking.you may regret it if you do.forget the money.you'll get more than what they're offering in telecoms later,you just have to keep developing yourself.

hi all,
this is a very interesting discussion and i think i can say something that u all will benefit from.
i work in one of the biggest telecom company in dis country and i will say that im regreting ever joining them.
telecom is a sector where u will enjoy if u are the xperienced type,but as a young graduate pls,dnt go into telecom because it will give u nothing but heartbreak.i never had dis insight when i was joinning the sector two years ago,i had a similar opportunity to joing gtbank bt then there was dis brouhaha about telecom sector wish i ended up singing with them.
in telecom,there is nothing like promotion and structure and the pay,after six month,ur guys in bank will be getting far above wat u are getting and they have a enough room for promotion cos of their expansion.
let me give u a sypnosis,i have a friend that joinned guinness when i was joining dis telecom company two years ago.late last month,he was enployed into my company at a higher level and a far better pay than myself,u ask me why?cos dis telecom company does not give a damn about trainning its personel but rather enjoy hijacking personel from companies that have traiined thiers,and dont 4get that i have two years experience too like my friend,

join a bank now and apply in two year time to any telecom company,they will employ u nd put u far above ur mate interms of incentives and position.

av fun

@jalo,
i will disagree with you when u say that telecoms is not it.1st and foremost what did u study as your 1st degree and are you talking about any of the three big telecoms company like Glo etc or the PTO's like Mutlilinks etc or their servicing company?
Etisalat is paying so much, that i knw of. i know of people people that have left MTN for them. Even VISAPHONE that just came is doing same. In the telecom industry you get updated with latest technology and if you are not an engineering or science inclined person or someone that has no passion for it, you cant fit in. I was once with the Bank and i left even with the fat salary, where time dey to take even enjoy you money. Its ok if you wanna build a career there, but i left becos i was not enjoyin the job, not because of the pay its all about your passion and satisfaction on the job. but still with good pay too.
@poster,
what i will say to you is nothing different from what most people have said here, But i will say, ask yourself this simple question? WHAT DO I REALLY WANT IN LIFE AND WHERE DO I WANT TO BE IN THE NEXT SAY 10YEARS. Its all about your passions. right now both jobs are paying good salary, so go for the one that you feel you will get satisfaction from and will also take you to your promise land, with good career growth and plan for your retirement as well.

my 2kobo contribution shah!!

As far as am concerned this issue of bank versus telecoms is all about your passion.

I am a computer Engineering Graduate, my passion is for telecoms and am doing well in that area as am already a Certified Cisco Networking Engineer but my best friend and classmate loves the bank sector which he joined during his NYSC. He is not planning on leaving as he is also doing well over there. He has improved himself as a Microsoft specialist.

So my their; Passion is the key in selection else you will not advance even in a green land.

Let me give you an instance, I have a friend I leaved with, he became a Branch manager in the space of four years from the date of his NYSC with the bank but in that same bank some people have worked 10 years before him and most likely will never be a Branch Head SO?

Where do you feel you can excel?

My Brother it depends on what u want.Money or Job satisfaction?If u are satisfied with where u are.Pls stay bicos every job has it's own ups and downs.Though pple always prefer telecomms cos u av time amd it is less stressful.U know what I will tell u.PRAY FOR GOD'S GUIDANCE
